Deck types?

Can someone give me a list of what kinds of decks, like Standard and Vintage, there are and what they mean? Because apparently I'm playing with a bunch of illegal cards.

The formats determine what sets you are allowed to choose from and what cards are legal in your deck. The formats are as follows:

Vintage - Any set EXCEPT Unhinged and Unglued.

Legacy - Any set EXCEPT Unhinged and Unglued.

Modern - 8th edition and Mirrodin up.

Extended - 10th edition and Alara up.

Standard - M12 and Scars of Mirrodin up.

Here is a list of all the formats in the order they were released. Here is a more detailed description of each format. And finally, Here is a list of all cards that are banned/restricted in each format, this is what makes Vintage different from Legacy. I hope this helps.
