EDH Deck Speed

Deck Help forum

Hey, I have been having some general trouble with my EDH decks. My local groups play very fast decks, and don't seem to run out of steam later like the RDW I used to play back in the day (Disclaimer: not that I was particularly successful back then)- if I don't have a strong board presence by turn 4 or so these days, I might as well not be playing, sometimes. The other day someone got Elvish Piper out on turn 2, and had like 20 power of creatures by turn 4. I can't quite figure out how to play like that. I had... only played two spells.

It seems, from experimenting, like things such as Extraplanar Lens and Sol Ring help a lot (expensive moneywise though), but it seems like I end up playing out my hand pretty fast, and I can't exactly load up a deck with enough of either to draw them each game.

Does anyone have any suggestions for ratios of things like, land:draw:mana acceleration that are more conductive to operating faster? I was only including 3-4 reusable draw effects, and 3-5 accelerators, with target land counts 36-37 or so, but it doesn't seem adequate, and my limited budget and playtime makes figuring this out via experimentation tricky. It seemed okay when I first started before everyone else had tuned their decks. I think I probably need to push land counts up a bit.

Particularly, I'm interested in speeding up my black/white deck, but even my green and red decks seems to have trouble. (I don't play blue much these days.) I'm pretty sure I don't have the right balance between land/acceleration/draw/etc. My curves seem alright for most of my decks, but lean somewhat steep, particularly in the green decks, because I'm kind of a Timmy. Any thoughts?

Elf Balling can be pretty fast..

T1: Land Elvish Mystic or anything like it

T2: land Elvish Archdruid or Priest of Titania

T3: the previously mentioned or any other low cost elf(s) and then some kind of artifact ramp IE. Caged Sun , Gauntlet of Power , or your previously mentioned Extraplanar Lens

T4: Land, Crazy mana!
