Hello all, I have never played EDH before and have suddenly been inspired to try it out. After a brief look over the rules I've begun to build my first EDH deck The Whispering One. Is there any thing I should know about the EDH format that could help me improve my deck or the way I should play it? or to put it another way, is there anything that I should keep in mined when building an EDH deck? Also, how do I determine the correct amount lands for a deck? I have 100 slots to fill and it seems very easy to over do it with the land base.

I wouldn't even go as far to say 30-36, I would say around 36 lands. Then you want mana rocks, such as Grim Monolith and Thran Dynamo . Sol Ring is a must in any EDH deck.
You want to be able to answer many of your opponents threats. For monoblack, this might be hard, so somehting like Amulet of Unmaking is pretty good. Compared to something like Murder , Gild is often more useful because it exiles the creature.
Just keep in mind that you can run more expensive mana costing cards. Something like Duress is underwhelming in my opinion.

I try to go with 30-36 lands depending on the deck. Some people will tell you to stay around 32, others will say up to 45. Just be reasonable with it and build your base like any other constructed deck. There's also tools to help you figure out how to shape your mana base, just search EDH Mana tools.
Other things to try to keep in mind, you're going to want a lot of cards that have similar effects. For example, don't just run Farseek , run Farseek , Cultivate , Explosive Vegetation , and Kodama's Reach . That way the deck plays a lot more consistantly.
I'd also advise checking out Epochalyptik's page for some really good guides and articles on EDH, as well as general deck construction.
