(EDH) Questioning my commander choice

Deck Help forum

I chose Momir Vig, Simic Visionary for the EDH deck I'm working on building, but I'm starting to question if he's the right choice. He seems like he'd be better suited for a creature-heavy deck, but mine only has 29 creatures.

Would Experiment Kraj be a better choice for my deck, Momir Vig, Snake Charmer? Obviously, the deck name would change. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated, too.

I use Momir Vig, Simic Visionary as the commander of one of my decks. I only run 27 creatures and I feel I could run fewer if needed. I run a lot of counterspells, draw and ramp. Vig is good when you have a toolbox of creatures to tutor out. If your going tribal aggro go with Edric, Spymaster of Trest .

Well thing is, Experiment Kraj relies on creatures too, although it can at least leech abilities off your opponent's creatures (difficult to do if the activation costs are outside your colours). I'd hang on to Momir Vig, Simic Visionary and perhaps even expand the creature count a bit.

Edric, Spymaster of Trest is of course another option.

Is the main appeal of Edric that he encourages everyone to attack somebody other than me?

At my local shop, most people win by taking everybody else out at once by some type of infinite combo, not by combat damage.

Well in that case Edric, Spymaster of Trest may still be a good general; they'll want to draw cards to get their combos together and thus would happily try to thwacks your enemies around for the cards.

Edric is a really good excuse for everyone to attack ONLY you. When your opponents lose advantage every time they attack someone else, they are going to choose to kill you instead. I'd stick with Momir Vig, and just make sure that the creatures in your deck are worth searching out. You don't need a whole bunch of creatures when you get to search for the one you need.

I'm not sure you understand how Edric works, landgrafb. If he's on your board, your opponents draw cards for hitting everyone but you. And as long as you don't flood your board with creatures and get the beats on, no one will really have a reason to swing at you versus the guy who's trying to combo out.

Yeah, I make the mistake of thinking that it's you who draws the card when someone attacks someone else; it's actually the creature's controller. Many would want to keep him alive so they can smack people and get cards that way. Like zandl says, try to resist smacking everyone on the face yourself for cards, because then it shatters the perverse group-hug diplomacy the card sets up and everyone will start gunning for you to stop you gaining massive advantage.

Even if you don't have all that many creatures in your deck, Momir Vig's ability means you'll still get to draw them rather often. Every UG creature spell will tutor another creature card, every G creature spell will line up a useful creature for you to draw into, and every U creature spell will give you an extra chance at getting another creature.

Whether or not it makes sense to switch over to another Commander depends on what kind of deck you want this to be. You should only make it an Experiment Kraj Deck if you want to rebuild it as a for-real Kraj deck. Likewise with Edric, Spymaster of Trest .

Yeah I read it wrong. My bad. I thought you drew a card every time your opponents got attacked.

Edric, Spymaster of Trest just works well for aggro. He provides defense in the political nature of just the ability. That defense enables tribal or weenie decks to swing out, draw more cards, spam, rinse and repeat.

Momir Vig, Simic Visionary is better for control and, to a much lesser extent, combo decks. I built my deck to not rely on Vig but if needed I'll bring him out to disrupt whatever the opponent is doing. The creature base is mostly toolbox: Trygon Predator , Void Stalker , Clone , Roil Elemental , etc. are all present to deal with certain threats. Then, once I have good board position, I tutor up some fatties for the win.

Experiment Kraj is good, but I feel The Mimeoplasm does it better and offers access to arguably the most powerful color in EDH.
