EDH super Mill deck

Deck Help forum

I want to build one of these, but I'm not sure what to use as my general and what would give me time to mill someone out. Is this even a good idea? I know a few cards that are good like

Brain Freeze

Glimpse the Unthinkable

Archive Trap

Oona, Queen of the Fae

But what else?

Using mill is difficult in EDH since most of the time it is played with multiple opponents. I tried it in the past and could reliably mill a single opponent but not 3.

Using mill as a means to power up other cards could probably work though. Look at Lazav, Dimir Mastermind, Traumatize, Undead Alchemist, Consuming Aberration, Duskmantle Guildmage, Szadek, Lord of Secrets, Keening Stone, Nemesis of Reason, Wrexial, the Risen Deep, Mortivore, Mindcrank, Bloodchief Ascension

Lazav or Szadek could be generals for a mill deck.

I like this... but what else? That can't possibly be it.. any rebound spells (like Runic Repetition?) or the like?

well there is Trepanation Blade, I don't usually rely on mill for my deck i use cards like quietous spike and evasive creatures with unblockable and use mill as a back up in this deck If Lazav were a commander... see if there any ideas you like :)

Szadek and Oona are your best choices for pure mill commanders. Lazav doesn't mill - he copies the bomb creatures that get milled. He'll occasionally copy Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, but in the end he still wants to win with commander damage by copying the bombs that get milled. In his case, you only need enough mill to find your enemy's bombs and copy them.

Oona likes to be defensive. She will give you blockers in the form of faeries, and wants you to accelerate mana for her mill ability.
Black has some acceleration that you can use to feed her. Cards like Crypt Ghast and the ultimate on Liliana of the Dark Realms can potentially power similar forms of pure repeatable mill such as Increasing Confusion and Sands of Delirium. Black acceleration can also combo off Realmwright and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to get you huge black mana no matter what lands you have.

Szadek wants to be aggressive and evasive, and needs other forms of defense. He also comes online later than Oona.
He already has flying, but it doesn't hurt to be outright unblockable and hexproof. Auras and equipment such as Whispersilk Cloak can help with both. They will also pump him up, which increase the speed at which he grows and mills. The problem with Szadek is that he can't do any actual damage so you can't win with 20 commander damage at all. Going through all 100 cards in each opponent's deck will take a lot longer than dealing 20 damage.

So he doubles his counters each time. Basically it's a matter of keeping him alive.

@killroy726, I most certainly enjoyed the deck. A few things I think I'll twiddle with it (like using Glimpse the Unthinkable but I liked it. (I still love being a dick with Brain Freeze + Isochron Scepter).

@x754, Yeah, I can agree Lazav might have a place in the deck overall since he's good for destroying legends, but he's not a miller type. Crypt Ghast and Liliana of the Dark Realms are godsends here, especially for the biggie Increasing Confusion.

Should I add in white? Maybe use a tri-color commander who can support white for the Aura power or would that defeat the purpose of milling?

add Jace's Phantasm, all of those cheap sorcery cards, Snapcaster Mage.

also add Artful Dodge, keep in until you get your Consuming Aberration/ Mortivore and then use it on an opponent it would kill. boom, flashback. boom, Runic Repetition. boom, kill. boom, flashback. you win(:

there's tons of mill cards to look at. I would focus on milling the biggest threat and attacking the others. Add a few board wipes to add a bunch to the graveyard pile for your Consuming Aberration and Mortivore if not casted already.

I want to point out real quick that Lazav does not remove legends due to the legendary rule. It says on the card that his name is still Lazav, Dimir Mastermind. The name of the card s the only thing that the legendary rule looks at. If Lazav is copying a legendary creature and the "real" version of it shows up, they will both be fine.

Indeed, Lazav, Dimir Mastermind doesn't trigger the legend rule except with another Lazav, Dimir Mastermind, so he will need other means of killing the legends and big creatures that hit the table. The best strategy for Lazav is usually to copy the opponent's best creatures by milling them, or by countering creature spells.

Counterspells probably get better value in play, because they will disrupt opponents more than milling will.

As a further note, it is generally impossible for Lazav to copy opponents' commanders unless they leave them in the graveyard. EDH rules return commander cards to the command zone as a replacement effect, so when a commander dies, it skips the graveyard completely.

You guys haven't mentioned two other cards in a mill deck, Bonehoard and Guiltfeeder . I currently run a Mill deck to play in EDH with my friends and find myself being the most threatening at most times. A lot of the cards you all have mentioned I do use though.

The problem becomes staying alive long enough to actually do some damage other than milling! A winning condition is difficult to come by since most of the "power/toughness are equal to cards in graveyards" lack trample. Using enchantments, lands, or artifacts that utilize Unblockable are amazing though!
