What to expect:

An unfortunate amount of people like to netdeck. Prepare your sideboard to help you deal with the most popular decks.

Other little things to keep in mind:

  • Bring dice or paper/pen to keep track of life totals and counters.
  • You won't get free mulligans.
  • Games will have a time limit.
  • Playmats and opaque sleeves will do wonders if you don't already have one/both.
  • If you make a misplay, don't expect do-overs.
  • FNMs are still pretty casual. Although in general it's going to be more uptight than a casual game, most players are plenty reasonable.
  • Everyone wants to win by turn 5 unless they're playing control - in that case, they want to win by not letting you do anything.
  • Bring a trade binder. A lot of people like to trade between matches if they go quickly.

The only other advice, is possibly call the store and see if they can hold the card for you if they have it, and you can buy it. Also I think you should be ready for some pretty competitive people, and their will prolly be 1 or 2 people playing "the best decks" but do not get discouraged if you lose, it will be your first fnm so just learn and ask more experience players for advice, also maybe inform them that you are new and to be patient with you, some people are "rules nazi's" good luck though! : )

Ah I was planning on using one of my iPad apps to deal with life/poison tracing, pen and paper may be a better idea. I figured there would be many default deck like Wolf Run Ramp, Tempered Steel, white weenies, token, etc etc, if you guys could help me build a sideboard to help with some of those that would be awesome :D Thanks for the sire link I am looking at it now. I have Dragon Shield sleeves and a pretty sweet looking Kaiba mat so I wouldn't leave those, and many dice to keep track of counters/tokens etc etc Thank guys! :D

ALWAYS untap first per the phases. If you have upkeep effects, do them BEFORE you draw any cards!

Also, DO cut your opponents' decks. Give 'em a quick shuffle too if you like.

Ok so long as NO ONE bends my cards to shuffle or shuffles like what I saw at worlds, I find it disrespectful to the owner, I have a way with my cards and would hope the other would not just do that with a deck that is not their own, you know? And thanks for that advice usually my friends and I do all of it around the same time usually with untap done last lol

Other minor things to expect hope it helps:

usually costs $5-10 to get in.

You can drop out any time you want, but it may hurt your DCI ranking.

If you have a question, call a judge. Typically done by screaming: JUDGE! No one will fault you for that, and if they do they suck.

Count your deck and sideboard before you play! you don't want to accidentally play with a 59 card deck.

You can ask to read opponent's cards.

Take your time and don't feel pressured. Better to run out of time than to play poorly IMO.

Don't keep a bad hand.

Good luck! Have fun!
