First MTG deck!
Deck Help forum

Hey everyone, I recently bought a number of magic cards for first time (after playing a few of the Magic video games), and I put together my first deck!

I'm open to any suggestions! I was considering playing against a friend of mine and then perhaps going to a FNM at my local card shop. Honestly I don't know if this deck even is "ready" for play or if people would consider it illegal or what have you. Regardless, I'd appreciate any help at all!

Your Voice of the Provinces i would replace with Doomed Traveler , cheaper and virtually does the same thing, Demystify , Elite Vanguard and Angel's Feather are not legal in standard, as anything older than M13 is not standard legal.
I would ask you, what is your goal with this deck. Or basically, what is your win condition? You seem to be very scattered and have a lot of disarray. Not to discourage you, because I am often the same way when starting a deck. But what is the main goal of the deck?
I like the human theme with Angel of Glory's Rise , but you need something solid like Champion of the Parish . I would ditch the Angel's Feather idea for something cheaper with extort such as Syndic of Tithes or Blind Obedience , that hits your opponent as well as brings you life. And to get more consistency I would say to increase some of your creatures by eliminating some that perform the same tasks or do nothing. With the current standard there is no reason not to have a card with the same mana cost with a dope ability. Just my two cents tho. If you need more than that or want me to give further recommendations, just say so. And welcome to the world of magic!

Thanks for the advice! Really good suggestions on what cards to replace and what to replace them with! I definitely want that Champion of the Parish =D
I feel like the main goal of this deck would be building a small army relatively quickly and then coming in swinging with enchants, big support creatures, etc. and hitting hard with overwhelming force. I like the focus on getting tokens on the field. It almost feels like a green deck but a little quicker so I'm not wide open while I'm building everything up. And since they're all gonna seem weak at first I'd hope to surprise my opponent when the support rolls in and all those tokens and small creatures are getting +1/+1 all over the place. And of course the creatures that are -/- for the number of creatures I control are gonna be in heaven (horrible white deck pun?).

You might think off adding Lingering Souls as well then, it's great even without the flashback. But hey, I am always a fan of a creature that replaces itself when it leaves. If you wanted to go for a b/w combo there are many more options

@HouseDemir86 I actually started out making a B/W deck and it had that card in it! Unfortunately I didn't feel I had enough black or mixed cards to make the idea plausible. I found that in the end I barely kept any of them as I narrowed the deck down so I decided to focus the deck.

Well technically HouseDemir86 is right about that. Anything that isn't in the Innistrad or Return to Ravnica Blocks or Magic 2013 Core Set aren't standard legal unless that is of course they got reprinted. Than and only than might you be allowed to use older versions IE all the current Shock Lands are reprints of the original Ravnica block, Same with Gilded Lotus Door to Nothingness (Original Mirrodin Block cards) Ghost Quarter a Dissension reprint. You get the idea lol
As for a Human theme and a first build it is pretty great. I'd recommend Elite Inquisitor or Precinct Captain It is also best to get your good cards or the ones you want to play the most to a 3/4 of and their support cards toa 1/2 of consistency is key. Boros Elite is a great 1 drop human who gets bigger with Battalion. Mikaeus, the Lunarch can be very useful there I believe.

Thanks for the help and suggestions DukeNicky! I'll be sure to keep an eye out for those cards! So, if a card gets reprinted can you still use your older versions of it?

That is correct. I'm allowed to run my Mirrodin version of Gilded Lotus in todays standard meta just because they reprinted it in M13

Well I updated my deck a bit! I may have made it a bit top heavy in terms of mana costs but I tried to make it a bit more consistent and focused. Any advice is always appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestions VENITUS! I made a few more changes to my deck after playing about 10 matches tonight! I actually won the majority of matches, but I noticed I had trouble with flying creatures. Hopefully the changes I've made will keep the strategy of this deck intact while helping it to be better prepared for creatures with flying.

Hey DukeNicky, I actually managed to get some of your suggestions like Precinct Captain and Mikaeus, the Lunarch ! Both were exceptionally useful when I played my friend again tonight! I reworked and really focused my deck down and it played really great so thanks for the help!
