Getting into Modern

I've been wanting to try out a different format than standard and I figure that Modern would probably be considerably cheaper than Legacy to get started in. I'm looking for a deck that would be viable, but pretty cheap to build. I've got mostly cards from Zendikar and up (mainly Vampires and MBC cards from before Zendikar rotated) so I'm mainly looking for something along the lines of Mono Black Midrange since I can't really afford the Damnations or Bob's I would need for a Control build.

just an idea but why not run a variation on the zendikar vampire decks from back when it was in standard. If you have the red vamps from innistrad and dark ascension, then maybe pick up some Blightnings, other red burn, and black hand disruption.

I can't think of any decks in the current meta that fit that description. My best suggestion is either to get a matyr deck since they tend to be relatively cheap or to go ahead and innovate your own mono black midrange list, test it extensively, and try it out.
