G/R Devotion, Feedback Wanted

Deck Help forum

Deck-ListI have spent a few months putting together this deck, saving up for the money cards and making decisions to substitute a few of the common "bombs" for a couple cheaper bombs that I feel work well together.

In play-testing against friends this deck has done well for itself, including a 2-0 win against a proxy mono-black deck identical to the deck that won Zach Jesse SCG Open Baltimore. I think that as it currently stands, it is worthy to enter a tournament.

Based on your experience and the deck list, do you think this deck is or isn't tournament (PTQ, GP) worthy? Why?

You have a really good start; however, you may encounter a few problems.

First off: you need something in the air. It will not only protect you but swing over opponents for damage. Stormbreath Dragon is pretty much an absolute need in G/R right now. Second: I run a very successful G/R devotion deck and it runs the Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx , Voyaging Satyr combo. Voyaging Satyr untaps the shrine so you can get even more mana. Not a lot of people suggest it, but i would run 4 Shrines and 4 Satyrs in doing this. It pays off so well. And if your worried about drawing too many of them, which usually isn't a problem, run 4 Elvish Mystic s, 4 Sylvan Caryatid s, and 4 of the Voyaging Satyr s. With that much ramp, you are fine. Lasly: in my opinion, I would run at least two Kalonian Hydra s. If you get Xenagos, God of Revels out and then him, it's a guaranteed win in two turns. The synergy is pretty good.

Here is my deck in case you want to take a glance at it: G/R Devotion(Possible Turn 3 and Turn 5 Win)

Thanks for the feedback Invisible_Stalker. I bought one Stormbreath Dragon yesterday but honestly it will take me a month or two to get the other three. I realize it's worth having as it will be in standard for awhile.

Kalonian Hydra on the other hand, as amazing of a card it is on its own (and especially with either or both Nylea & Xenagos) it will likely be out of standard before I get to play it in a big tournament. I'm trying to have something that's strong now and will continue to be a solid base until Theros rotates out.

If Elvish Mystic isn't likely to be re-printed in M15 I will definitely run 4x Voyaging Satyr with 4x Nykthos.

Thanks for the suggestons. Your G/R deck looks very powerful,

I understand the guaranteed card draw, but why would you run 4 nykthos? That's a dead draw mid way through the game, and I could see you beating yourself up when you have 3 in hand and 1 on the field already.

Stormbreath Dragon and Kalonian Hydra rotate out at the sane time in the fall.

Pixonova: because it is that good and I rely on it that much. All I need is one shrine, two other lands, and two ramps and I can play anything in my hand. The combo with Voyaging Satyr and it is extremely powereful. Makihito Mihara ran 4 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and 4 Voyaging Satyr s and placed third in the pro tour tournament. It doesn't matter if you draw others cause if you have one, you're going to get a tin of mana anyways. And I have a lot of ramps. So even if I do get to mid game or late game it won't matter. I've drawn three before and done fine. Garruk, Caller of Beasts , Domri Rade and Xenagos, The Reveler if you ultimate him, more than make up for it. My games usual don't go past turn 7 though.

Don't forget new Legend-ruling your own shrine. You use it, slap down the next one, send the first one to the graveyard, and use your second one with the mana you built up with the first. You're not going to sit there with 3 in your hand, you're going to jump all over that mana-ramp thing and play your hand.

Haven't thought about it like that mercurial_golem since I have Voyaging Satyr . But you may be onto something incredible. Especially if you don't have the satyr out. But if you do...can you imagine tapping it, untapping it, tapping it, then playing another shrine to tap! So much mana!

@Invisible_Stalker on a side note: a Modern deck that had Crucible of Worlds and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx could get that bump from graveyard playing of Nykthos, right? Then if you were running Exploration , Oracle of Mul Daya , Rites of Flourishing , or even Summer Bloom (not sure if that's Modern or not)... Basically Green devotion mana ramp on steroids... with Xenagos, The Reveler , it wouldn't be too hard to power out a sup'ed up Banefire ... Too many crazy thoughts.

mercurial_golem: yeah, you just had a wonderful brain baby lol. If you plan on running a modern G/R burn deck, those combos would for sure have to be in there.

I'll 2nd what Invisible_Stalker said, mercurial_golem you have an excellent idea for a modern deck. Due to my budget, my focus on standard and my lack of private card pool, I will leave it to you to build such a powerful deck. Brew on!
