Haunted Plate Mail or Gideon, Champion of Justice for U/W Control

Deck Help forum

Ok, so I have a U/W Control deck put together for post-Theros Standard. I've been using Gideon, Champion of Justice in the main deck as an alt win-con, in case a Slaughter Games or Pithing Needle or some such shuts down AEtherling . People have been commenting that he is not good in a control deck and that Haunted Plate Mail is better. Can someone please explain the advantages or disadvantages to running either of these as my second win-con?

Ætherling Wins. is the deck list.

Gideon, Champion of Justice has the advantage of being indestructible as a creature and the disadvantages of only being able to activate at sorcery speed and being open to attacks from your opponent's creatures. Haunted Plate Mail has the advantage of being about to be activated at instant speed to block and the disadvantage of not being indestructible as a creature.

Neither. Plate Mail's a Rumbling Baloth that dies to most removal, and Gideon, while he doesn't die to things like Putrefy , still dies to Hero's Downfall , Dreadbore , Detention Sphere , etc without gaining value.

My vote is definitely for Jace, Memory Adept , which can either be a draw engine or an incredibly fast clock. I played 1 in Esper control this Standard and a lot of the time you can just +1 until you stabilize and have answers in hand, then go 0, 0, ultimate, GG. Great card.

I'm running 2x Jace, Architect of Thought and I'd rather not run 4x jace cards due to legendary rule...
