hellrider or skyknight legionnare?

Deck Help forum

hide yo kids, hide yo wife, the blitz is coming

my version of the blitz. Hellrider is a champ, but would skyknight legionnare be a better fit?

Angel of Glory's Rise in the sideboard against zombies / board sweepers?

Khanye says... #2

also would Pillar of Flame be better here than Searing Spear ?

No...pillar would come a turn earlier but it misses a lot of other creatures we see in aggro and having access to a T2 Legion's Initiative will prevent the pillar from killing what it is intended to kill. I would go Hellrider because you get more value from it. The legionnaire is 2 damage if it hits. The Hellrider is damage just bc you attacked.

Hellrider for sure. There isn't enough other synergy with Skyknight Legionnaire to give up on a much higher impact card. A 2/2 that's maybe a 3/3 with Mayor of Avabruck  Flip out and maybe pumping Champion of the Parish by 1 isn't as exciting as a 3/3 that burns your opponent with your whole team regardless.

Angel of Glory's Rise , is a no because you'll still loose that fight. By the time that your 21 lands gets to 7 mana that control player will be so firmly in place with card advantage and board state that it won't matter. It might win a game or two, but overall the solution to the control match up is not by having cards dead in your hand because you won't have the mana out until much later than turn 7.

Searing Spear is better.

I'd also drop the Angel of Jubilation since a full 1/3 of your mana base, all your RG lands, will make it difficult for it to come out on time.

thanks for the insights. whats a goodside board choice against esper then? Pithing Needle for drownyard. what about against Supreme Verdict ? or just hope to run them off before they can cast it?

Immortal Servitude maybe?

swagtusk (Thragtusk ) might be an option for sideboarding against Supreme Verdict and also another good scavenge target for Varolz, the Scar-Striped . though Immortal Servitude might be best.

May 2, 2013 1:58 p.m.

The best way for Aggro to survive a board wipe is to slow down a bit against control. Get in the damage when you know you can, but don't over-extend. If you play every card in your hand and get wrathed, you're gonna lose. Keep a bit back and rebuild.

Varolz, the Scar-Striped doesnt work as it would need me to splash black. Thragtusk is good, but that would change the strat to more of a mid range. I can easily sideboard 2 Immortal Servitude against esper and take out Ash Zealot

I thought I saw varolz in the initial deck list, sorry.

By being aggro and steadily putting out threats that you force them to respond to. You want to be lean and fast, and with some kind of a plan to finish off the last few points, usually burn. Everything else just gets in the way of that and plays into making the game into something they want it to be by going long.

The longer the game goes the more card advantage they gain and the better their top decks get and the worse an aggro deck's get.

An aggro deck should never care about playing a response to Nephalia Drownyard because the game has been won or lost for them long before that would be an issue. What's better to look for are cards that are hard to answer threats for them. Either because they require specific mechanics that their colors are bad at or they require multiple cards to deal with.

Voice of Resurgence should play the part I meant for Thragtusk , this one totally slipped my mind till the site went to the thropters. 2/2 for 2, forces your opponent (especially esper builds) to slow down to sorcery speed or make more creatures, survives a verdict with another creature that grows as you drop more creatures.

lol capriom85 i totally forgot about those...i think the deck is good to go now. debating about putting in Ruric Thar, the Unbowed instead of the Thundermaw Hellkite , but the hellkite is too good of a finisher to pass up

you already had your answer to the board wipes...as long as it's not Terminus or Cyclonic Rift , but I don't see those rearing their heads in Esper right now as much as Supreme Verdict . Also, I like the Thundermaw Hellkite in place of the angel. I agree that with your build you should not worry about Nephalia Drownyard since your opening hand decides 80% of if you won or lost, especially against control. Those Thundermaws can change the tide for you, though.

Some suggestions: Aurelia, the Warleader (maybe sub for 1 Thundermaw. Control can't survive 2 unanswered attacks.)

Ghost Quarter ....better sideboard answer to the drownyard if you're set on answering it.

Ghor-Clan Rampager ...+4/+4....thanks!!! oh, and this tramples right over your Augurs???

May 2, 2013 3:27 p.m.

Khanye says... #16

i had the Ghor-Clan Rampager in there before, replaced it with Hellrider . Aurelia, the Warleader was originally in this build. I guess I can add her back, just in case a supreme verdict does hit and I have an empty board going into turn 6...

i also used to run Domri Rade in here. put him back in? or too slow? currently running him and Aurelia, the Warleader in my mid range naya deck, which is equally

Enter the Angel, exit the Maze

bitchy....just in a different way.

May 2, 2013 3:33 p.m.

capriom85 says... #18

if you sub in for a Hellkite, I reccomend that Aurelia...double combat is amazing. I run a Naya midrange, and once she drops my Smiters, Thrags, and Angels of Serenity can't be answered.

May 2, 2013 3:36 p.m.

capriom85 says... #19

Domri Can work...I may throw him in my Naya as a 2 of just to playtest for a bit...I don't run enough non-creature for him to hurt. I have Garruk in the for the card advatntage, though...so we will see.

May 2, 2013 3:38 p.m.

Khanye says... #20

i think i will sideboard the domri in place of mini garruk to mine. plenty of creatures, and domri can help bring me back post wipe should it happen. but then again so can mini garruk...

decisions, decisions...

May 2, 2013 3:41 p.m.

capriom85 says... #21

you don't need to sacrifice anything to Domri Rade , and his emblem is a game ender.

May 2, 2013 3:54 p.m.

Khanye says... #22

garruk doesnt require a sacrifice either...you can kill one of their creatures to flip him.
