HELP!
Deck Help forum

All my friends are building these ridiculous decks and I'm new to Magic. I don't mind spending a little bit of money in order to build a competitive deck, I just don't know what I should build. So, can anyone suggest some top tier decks that I should try?!?

Please don't post the same thread to multiple forums.
What format are you playing? I'd assume Standard or casual because the other formats are going to be harder to play.

You could look a recent decklists from events on the wizards website. If you want help on cheaper decks, decide whate colours/ strategies to go for etc, then pull together a rough decklist and you can get more specific help on that.

If you really want to know what's top tier right now, look at the decks that are winning Grand Prix standard tournaments. Or, even better, Magic Worlds just finished up, so you can look at decks from those to get ideas. I know that right now, Jund is pretty popular, but it's always good to try something you want to do and make it as good as you can.

Well I've thought about the new Slivers, but I feel like it just doesn't have the ability to beat some of the decks they have been building.

The major problem I see is this: you can jump right into Standard with a top-tier deck, but, as a new player, you may simply not have the skills and intuition to pilot that deck properly. This is especially true of combo and control decks, although those are less popular in the recent Standard meta. Tempo is easier to play because it's a bit more straightforward.
Additionally, I worry that you are going the wrong direction. It's not bad for a new player to want to win, but I don't like to see new players get concerned about playing only (or primarily) to win because it is a choice that causes many, many players to burn out and give up on the game. It's important that you play something you enjoy playing. There are plenty of competitive decks out there, so I suggest looking at a bunch and thinking about which one makes the most sense to you and which caters to you as a player. You could even proxy the decks before you buy one just so you can be sure it's what you want to use.

If you are going to splash out on a new standard deck, wait until theros comes out, as you don't want to be wasting money on Innistrad cards that are going to rotate out soon.

Thanks for all the help! I think I'll focus on making my Sliver deck better because I really like the play style. Reminds me of swarming and team boosts like you get in other games like Yu-Gi-Oh!

Slivers are also a really fun deck to play, they might not always win, but you can always have fun with them.

What sort of format are you playing? You need more details if you want specific help.
