Help me beat my friends deck

Deck Help forum

Posted on June 4, 2012, 10:41 p.m. by Bobshmow

So I posted my friends deck under my account which you can see here Elf Pun To Come. My friends and I all use to play pretty casually but one of them made this one and its been crushing most of us. Right now my only deck that has a slight chance against him is my soldier deck and that tends to be if he hasn't drawn the cards he needs. I was thinking about making a burn or kill deck to get rid of the key creatures. Suggestions would always be great for deck ideas or ways to help out my soldier. Preferably I would like the deck to be as cheap as possible. Help me wipe the smug smile off his face please!

A burn deck with maindeck sweepers will do best against something like elves.

4x Pyroclasm , 4x Blazing Salvo and/or Lightning Bolt , 4x Slagstorm , that sort of thing.

since it seems your playing casual i would suggest running some kind of control deck, or some sort of destroy deck. control being loaded with spells you can use to cancle key cards, and destroy to get rid of the ones that get through. Other than that you can fight tribal with tribal and I'm thinking slivers. slivers working together very well should be able to topple this without much problem.

If you're into Red burn, then Volcanic Fallout , Blasphemous Act , Pyroclasm , and Slagstorm are all terrific cards against aggro decks.

Ok you have a couple of ways you can go here.... counter his stuff and lock him down, the blue route, or burn him down and wipe his board. I prefer the red route of course to the blue one so lets focus on that, cuz we all know red is the best color.

Earthquake is a great card that should wipe most of his dorks off the battlefield in a hurry. Also Bonfire of the Damned is another reasonable possibility. these are great board wipers and will kill off almost everything on his side. Other options Pyroclasm , Whipflare etc.

Now since you are playing red and doing so casually 4x Lightning Bolt is pretty much a given. Then you have a decision to make, now that you have control over the field how would you like to win? For epic matchups you might want to consider the old stand by Goblins vs elves... other options are going big or over the top. If you want multicolor red / white or red / black make nice pairs. if you want some synergies red /black is great for vamps, or red /white is nice for humans at the moment, or some sweet multicolor red/white cards you can pick up. Also white has Wrath of God and black has card:Black Sun's Zenith so pick your color combo / tribe to match your playstyle and then get to work . Start with red and then go from there is my opinion.

If you play mostly 3+ player games then and this friend's elf deck is the swarm type then cards like Ghostly Prison , Propaganda , Dissipation Field , and Edric, Spymaster of Trest will be perfect as they'll make your friend's elves seem more like your instrument of war (as he'll be more tempted to attack into the path of least resistance). You would also run some board wipe effects and then with the remaining slots add in your land and what ever wincon you want to use. Here's an example Chancellor multiplayer of Bant, when I built this I just took some cards that I've been wanting to play with and threw them together.

It seems to me that most comments are with a red deck in mind. Now you said that you have a soldier deck. I'm going to assume that it is a white soldier deck (I hope I'm right). If it is, I have a really cool combo for you.The combo consists of two otherwise harmless seeming enchantments. These are: Mark of Asylum and Lightmine Field . Together these combo to create an amazing offensive and defensive barrier. Your creatures are free to attack without fear that Lightmine Field will hurt them because Mark of Asylum prevents that damage. Your opponents can't attack in mass because all of their creatures will die from Lightmine Field ! Almost ever elf deck wins by attacking with lots of creatures. This will definitely help you beat your friends deck (and it will probably make him quit mad). Hope you take my advice!

Lightmine Field , on its own, is a fantastically underrated card. I used it in Standard and nobody knew what the hell it was. Then it proceeded to lock the game down and give me time to win.

Yes, but if he's running a more aggro based soldier deck, it would be more advantageous to use the combo I mentioned. That way he can still attack for the win. It's cheap. It's easy. And it doesn't require much change in a deck.

Understood. I was just pointing out how good Lightmine Field is in general. I wasn't detracting from the combo you mentioned.

I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to bash your comment. I just wanted to make sure that it was understood that Lightmine Field and Mark of Asylum work really really well together.

P.S. You all should take a look at the decks that I have on this site!

I know. I do that almost every time. Whoever made the deck with the name Pyromancer's Ascension was a friggin' genius.

Taking a look at your friend's deck, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn seems like the threat that hasn't been addressed yet. In order to prevent his stupidity from going off, you need a creature ability that addresses him. Ballynock Trapper , Catapult Master , even something as simple as Goldmeadow Harrier or card:Gideon's Lawkeeper would keep it at bay (Note: all examples are soldiers). Other effects that come from permanents also work.

Do you have an online version of your soldier deck? What are we looking at there?

If you're willing to spend a little bit more on a deck, you could try a black removal deck I have listed in my profile. It should be able to keep pace with your friend's deck while still setting up board presence.

creature wise Caldera Hellion does quite a thing against elves...and for sweeper+whatnot why not try Jund Charm if its within ur colors.. other than that, basically red sweepers do the job... you can even go artifacts and use Whipflare

Oblivion Ring would probably be a cheap answer to the country sized eldrazi in terms of both casting cost and money.

As for Lightmine Field combo'd with Vigor is entertaining. Attack with 3-5 soldier tokens that become 4/4's or 6/6's before they deal damage! or attack with a Hero of Bladehold and deal 16 damage.

hey, if you're into running blue white, terminus and upheaval work quite well :D

Stonehorn dignitary + venser is also amazing.

Hero of Bladehold attacking with Vigor and Lightmine Field in play would only result in 8 damage, unfortunately - the ruling on Lightmine Field is a little weird when it comes to creatures put into play attacking. According to the Gather rulings, creatures that are put onto the battlefield attacking are counted for the total amount of damage done to each creature, but are not actually dealt damage themselves. Thus, if you only attacked with the Hero, Lightmine Field would only deal damage to it, but it would count the tokens as attacking creatures when determining how much damage to deal. I think this has to do with when the ability of Lightmine Field triggers vs when it resolves.

June 5, 2012 2:06 p.m.

zandl says... #21

It has to do with "attack" versus "attacking". If you attack with a creature, that means you're declaring it as an attacker. If a creature enters the battlefield tapped and attacking, then you never had the chance to declare it as an attacker. Because of this, you technically never attacked with it, but it is still attacking.

But that's beside the point. If you have both Hero of Bladehold and Lightmine Field in play and you declare Hero as an attacker, its ability and the Lightmine Field 's ability will trigger simultaneously. Since they're both your cards, you'd get to choose the order in which they go on the stack. What you would always want to do is put Hero of Bladehold 's triggered ability onto the stack and put the Field's triggered ability on the stack above it. Lightmine Field resolves first, dealing just 1 damage to Hero of Bladehold , then the tokens come into play.

Unless you have Vigor out, and then the order is reversed.

Thanks everyone for the feed back so far! Looks like I'll probably go burn as a have a lot of the cards already suggested. Some asked so I put my soldier deck up which you can find here Soldiering Soldiers Soldier. After taking it apart and looking at it I can tell it needs some work. Friend just got a Hero of Bladehold which hes willing to trade to me for pretty cheap. Thanks again for the help.
