Deck Help forum

Posted on March 10, 2014, 6:18 a.m. by KnightFire

Myself and my friends generally play a very creature heavy "fair" style of magic, usually using tribal themed decks of various types. I play quite a bit of MTGO, but none of them do, so I am exposed to a lot of deck archetypes that they aren't really familiar with.None of my friends are convinced that the various non-creature based deck archetypes that are seen at GP and pro tour events would be any good (and that I lose to them on MTGO because I am not very good (despite the fact that I can equal or beat most of them at paper magic), rather than because they are strong decks). I intend to prove them wrong ;-)

So, what would be an interesting to play, fun to learn deck that isn't heavily creature based, that I could put together for a reasonable amount (~$150)?Any suggestions?

For people like that I encourage you to run mill...just because people like that deserve mill

I've built a Stuffy Doll deck a while ago, I wanted something out of the "HURR DURR ADD CREATURE ADD CREATURE UR DEAD" format, 'cause it bores me a little bit, and it doesn't make for a very special game.

Here is the deck: Polly Pocket... keep in mind it's still a work in progress, but it's really funny to play it.

Plenty of creatureless archetypes exist. There's discard, mill, pillowfort, cruel control, burn, etc. Even decks in standard can run Maze's end and creatureless control.

A quick search of tappedout gave me this deck. I kind of like it too. It's a budget version of a more popular discard deck. You could put together something similar quite easily. For some reason, the site won't let me direct link it, so here's the URL:

What format are you looking for? For modern, Restore Balance is brutal against fair decks. Check out

Some nice ideas there, keep them coming. I am not too bothered by format, I guess modern or legacy rather than standard as I think there are more interesting tricks that way.

Turbo Fog Maze's End. No matter what you do, Turbo Fog will infuriate them to no end if they use a bunch of creatures.

Dimir-Azor Tandum (Use it or lose it) while it may be a tad more expensive then 150$ it may give you some inspiration. Miller Time is a less expensive deck I took apart to make it. A good Pyromancer Ascension deck is known to win often too provided they dont destroy Pyromancer Ascension .

my Venser Houdini's Disappearing Act has stumped creature decks before too.

Liliana's Caress + Underworld Dreams + Wheel of Fortune is a favorite multiplayer make-everyone-hate-you play. Just be sure to also run lots of wrath effects. Bloodchief Ascension is also criminally easy to activate in multiplayer. Burning Inquiry is mean, and Skull Rend is Hymn to Tourach & Lightning Strike combined. Dream Salvage to refill your own hand. But you can really only play this deck once before you lose your playgroup, hahahaha.

I second the suggestion of turbo fog mazes end. Every creature heavy deck hates to lose against fog. And lands. lol

I second the turbo fog. As a former "fair player" from way back in the day, that would be the ultimate way to prove the point. Also pillow fort might work. Mill would also be viable as it would be fairly creature light and show that "control" style decks actually have merit.

it's kinda funny to me when people shun competitive decks. Like, I understand not wanting to play a casual deck against a top 8 deck, or having a negative opinion of net-decking, but it doesn't make sense to say they're not good decks or that non-permanent based strategies aren't valid.

The boros deck that runs Satyr Firedancer and Young Pyromancer is a burn deck that's just nasty. It really only splashes white for Warleader's Helix and Boros Charm .

I like the boros burn deck. Its fast and nasty but how it will do in group play is something i know nothing about. Esper style control with shit tons of board wipes, card draws and two aetherlings. that ought to do it.

Sphere of Safety is killer. 4x Detention Sphere 4x Pacifism 4x Claustrophobia 4x Sphere of Safety 4x Supreme Verdict . It just get's nasty! And is very budget.

Oh don't forget to throw in a Heliod, God of the Sun to go with your Sphere of Safety !

Thanks, more good ideas there. I have had a play with a few of them, and like the Stuffy Doll and The Rack ideas. I think turbo Fog + Maze's End also looks interesting, but is a bit more expensive to put together.

Based on some of the suggestions here, how about a turbofog Stuffy Doll deck? Doll's are freaky

I think that will really wind up my friends ;-)
