Help my little brother beat me.

Deck Help forum

Posted on Aug. 1, 2013, 10:26 a.m. by Jay

My little brother saved up $75 (a lot when you're 13) to build a modern deck. It doesn't have to be competitive, just a starting point for him to work from that can hold it's own versus my friends and my modern decks. He wanted to show off a promo BoP, so this is what I came up with: Bravebird

I would really appreciate it if you guys had any input for it. Thanks for the time.

does he have to show off his BoP? cause Tribal Deck: Elementals could be really fun to play with... its only $98 bucks cause of the 2 cavern of souls but those are not necessary.

otherwise, Secrets of Burning is about $24 over without the lands which are once again not necessary. i can relate more with this one as i have this deck in paper and it really is extremely fun to play with.

checking out the actual deck now

If birds don't work out, giants might. You can swap out the Gamble for a Giant Harbinger or something to make it modern legal.

What kind of player is he, a creature heavy dude? Or a control player?

Normally just a straightforward creature guy, so I like the deck because it's easy to understand but helps him learn control while enjoying his sword birds.

$75 budget for modern? Go with infect and will actually be competitive. Maybe even tribal Merfolk. Good luck

It doesn't have to be competitive, just modern legal. My friends can be ballbusters for that.

Budget Modern? I'm your guy.

Tridents? We Prefer Teeth The Tribal Merfolk deck I run is almost Modern Legal. The playset of Saprazzan Heir is the only card that would need to be swapped out. There's plenty of blue alternatives, even just creature-wise. Price? Just over $60.

It All Started with a Blue Bear... Same sort of thing here. Tribal Illusions, almost modern legal. Swap the Rhystic Study s for a pair Encrust , the two Apathy for just about anything (I'm in favor of filling out the playset of Adaptive Automaton , Riftwing Cloudskate , or Kraken's Eye ), and the Ponder and Preordain for a playset of Serum Visions . All-told, the deck barely scrapes the $30 mark. (Ya don't get much more 'budget' than that.)

Heck, I may just make those changes to the decks too.

Oh-shoot. I didn't read the description thoroughly enough. My bad if my suggestions don't work due to the lack of BoP.

When I want to screw with expensive decks, I run a 2-color hate-bears build using Leonin Arbiter and Ghost Quarter to screw up complex manabases. Something to consider.

@Graft: Excellent, I love that strategy.

:) Of course Path to Exile , Aven Mindcensor , and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben are the other cogs in that strategy. Unfortunately of those three only Path to Exile could be considered a budget card. Maybe the deck could go mono-white, which is powerful even on a budget and still has access to Squadron Hawk . There are cards like Hada Freeblade and Kazandu Blademaster and Auriok Edgewright that people basically forgot about when they rotated from standard, and work great with equipment. Brave the Elements is always excellent in a build like that.

He likes the Caw Blade idea best because it allows him to really show off the BoP as well as giving him a good place to start so he knows what to trade for. He also really like the Hatebears idea, but felt like with the sacrifices of Budget it wouldn't be effective enough to really shine. I think we're gonna go with Bravebird, but if anybody has any more thoughts on it the both of us would appreciate it (he liked the ones you guys already gave on it, too)!

Thanks to everyone who helped!
