Help with first few turns of Mill

Deck Help forum

Hi all! I have been playing magic for about 3 weeks now, and its tons of fun. I played Heroic for a few weeks, and have lots of success with it, but wanted to build something different for a change of pace. When somebody beat me with a mill, it peaked my interest, and I started brewing this: Milling me softly. Unfortunately, I get run over very quickly. Any help for how to survive and stabilize within the first say, 6 turns? Also, it has to stay around 20 bucks total. :) Gotta pay the bills too! Thanks!

What I often tell people in this same predicament is that mill decks need to behave more like control decks than burn decks. There just isn't a sequence of cards, outside of eternal formats, that can burn through the ~50 cards in someones library before they simply kill you if they are on an aggressive plan.

What you ideally want to be doing is to disrupt your opponent enough while protecting some repeatable source of mill.

My advice is to lose the Breaking / Entering and add in two Tome Scour , breaking mills more but ties up 2 mana compared to scours 1. use the 2 extra card slots for 2 Doom Blade or 2 Soul Ransom .

lose one of each of Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker , Lazav, Dimir Mastermind , and Consuming Aberration . Add in 3 Wall of Frost or Murmuring Phantasm to bring your mana curve down and give you some blockers early on. with legendary creatures you should avoid having more then two in your deck since you could draw multiples.

lose Crypt Incursion , half your creatures get a boost from your opponents graveyard and you don't want to be emptying your own with Consuming Aberration . Consider Codex Shredder . You can fetch back a card in your grave as well as use it on turn one to start milling cards for free.

If you have the cash consider buying some copies of Temple of Deceit or Watery Grave
