How can i beat U/W and aggro?

Deck Help forum

My local FNM meta is flooded with U/W control (using Jace and Elspeth as win-cons), Gruul aggro, and a couple "Red Wins" decks.

Is there a good deck/guild that can handle all three of those builds? I'm open to suggestions! Thanks :)

Mono Black Devotion is a pretty solid bet.

The mass amount of removal spells takes care of the aggro decks, and UW usually crumbles to a well-timed Gary.

Really? Gray Merchant of Asphodel ? U/W seldom cares about healing the opponent, they often use Last Breath . Beyond that, I can't imagine a 2/4 is much of a threat? I'm curious now.

Mono black devotion is definitely on of the best decks in standard. It has a very good matchup against most control deck and almost every aggro deck.

Its not that the opponent gets healed, it's that you take 8-12 damage out of nowhere.

Mono black is /the/ deck to play right now at tier one. Its capable of beating just about everything.

If you don't believe me, just try it out. Control decks have a very hard time distinguishing what to counter, when to counter, when to wipe, when to drop a threat... and aggro decks can't come back from the huge life swings that this deck is capable of.

I haven't seen a U/W control deck drop a creature yet (although they do often have 1 AEtherling , if anything, in the deck somwhere). 100% of the time it's death by Elspeth, Sun's Champion , often alongside some form of Jace.

I don't play U/W, but it seems simple enough: counter Gary, remove Desecration Demon , and Verdict any Pack Rat .

I'm currently running Golgari:

I just stopped playing UW strictly because of the sheer amount of MBD decks that are at my LGS. Yeah, you pegged the plan exactly, but most of the time that plan just doesn't work out.

Golgari is certainly on the rise. It's great against aggro decks in particular. I'd just say watch out for any UW control variant. If you don't play it quickly enough, you stand the risk of not being able to play anything.

And i'd advise against Rakdos aggro in your meta. That deck is best when everyone is playing midrange.

Yeah, none of MDB creatures are too terribly important to a control decks.

MDB devotion doesn't beat control with Gray Merchant of Asphodel , if they ever have a board large enough for the drain to mater the game was already lost for other reasons. In most games, they beat control with Thoughtseize . Mutavault and Underworld Connections . Those are the 3 most important cards in the match-up.

The way I build my Rakdos deck is midrange. As for Golgari, I don't know if I should go creature-heavy with spot removal, or removal heavy with tough creatures like Reaper of the Wilds ?

I've been using MBD for the past few weeks, and I've lost 9 out of 11 matches vs. mostly U/W or Esper control. Granted, I only have a singleton Desecration Demon , no Mutavault s, no Erebos, God of the Dead , and only one Liliana of the Dark Realms . It's strong, and all the games are close, but control decks just stay patient and outlast me no matter what.

I just recently got a playset of Pack Rat , but I think I might try Rakdos burn control instead and take a break from mono-black.

@MagnusMTG

You're losing because you don't have the full deck. Erebos totally kills the UW Sphinx plan, Des. Demon eats up a counterspell at minimum, and mutavault can win games on its own.

@ThatBlueMage: Yes, I know.

For players who don't have the 200+ $$ to spend on just 3 or 4 copies each of those three spells, there needs to be another option.
