How do I stop the mills? (Standard)

Deck Help forum

I'm pretty much getting drownyard-ed to death here lol. I put in one Ghost Quarter in there just to keep off that and some other lands like kessig wolfrun. it works till they get jace or something and I mill 10, then I dreadbore (maybe), but by then it would have done its job. i was thinking Elixir of Immortality or Witchbane Orb for the side board. idk which one to pick or how many to put in there? what do I take out?

The elixir and orb are great cards. some more might be Wheel of Sun and Moon or any of the legendary eldrazi.(Kozilek, Butcher of Truth , Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre , Emrakul, the Aeons Torn ) Good Luck!

This shouldn't be posted here, but to answer your question, Witchbane Orb and Pithing Needle would both work fine.

@KorSplicer I think he's talking about standard.

I think this post would be more appropriate in the Deck Help section of the Forums.But yes. Pithing Needle is a stop all. No matter what they play that will mill you (well, almost anything) you can stop the mill with that card. It's both more Flexible and Cheaper than Dreadbore, and at the same speed.

And yes as has been stated above me, Witchbane Orb and Pithing Needle are your best answers in Standard. Elixir of Immortality stops mill in the face, more often than not they run out before you with that nice lil bottle lol

as stated in the obove Pithing Needle and Witchbane Orb . practically the orb is better agaisnt mill but costs 4mana making it counterable and a turn1 needle is not(atleast not in standard)

but i run both in my side since needle works against AEtherling and planeswalkers aswell. runnig orb agisnt mill aswell and it also stops discard and burn.

mind if running orb it doesnt help against Mind Grind . witch is a card i would run in mill alteast in the side.

in standard mill Elixir of Immortality is probably the absolute worst to see hit the field. I'm a mill player and i hate that card. But then again any smart miller would have Reap Intellect to get rid of things like that, or course Surgical Extraction is much better, but its not standard.

So I looked at your deck. If your playing a straight up mill deck it shouldn't have too many creatures in it. you could probably take out 2xMutilate s and throw in 2 elixirs. Even if they are running creatures you probably won't see a big swarm of them so mutilate won't be that handy. You also have enough other spot removal that should hold you over. you could probably remove the Pillar of Flame s or Duress from your sideboard to throw in the elixirs....hope that helps.

Surgical Extraction wouldn't work vs elixir as it only targets a card in the graveyard and then you get to search everywhere else for it, but Elixir of Immortality never hits the graveyard.

But to get back to OP's point, I agree with having Pithing Needle or Witchbane Orb in your sideboard. I play UW mill and I hate seeing either of those against me, since it causes me to have to blow a Detention Sphere or Negate .

I'm surprised noone mentioned Psychic Spiral . Play that and have Snapcaster Mage in your deck. Make the mill deck do work for you.

Yup, thanks everyone for the replies. I'm gonna go with both Witchbane Orb and Pithing Needle make some room for them in the side. Maze's End is a real hard match up for me too, so Pithing Needle really is best. having both is good just as a back up
