I play at FNM's but not every week, and i play a small group of people on thursdays. I play only standard legal. All of my friends and most of the other people i know have at most 3 decks they use at one time, some only have1. I have 6 as of right now and im always looking to make more, but i hate taking apart a deck, even if it doesnt win all the time, sometimes a deck is just fun to play with even if it loses. So let me know if you think 6 is too much, then please have a look at my page...check out all 6 of my current decks and tell me which ones i should cut.

I used to keep at least 10 on hand wherever I went, but I currently only have 3 or 4 standard decks built and 1 EDH. I'm about to have 1 Modern and 1 Legacy deck that will be permanently built, so I'll always have roughly 5-6 decks after that point. When I played Yu-Gi-Oh back in the day, I believe I kept somewhere around 20 decks built at all times. It was quite easy to make a relatively competitive deck in that game at the time, so I figured why not. The dual lands and such in MTG make it rather expensive to do so, or else I'd have many more.

At one point I had around 20 standard decks tossed together. Annoyed my friends, because they never new what I was going to bring the the table. However, now I usually only keep 2-3 decks constructed at a time, so I can keep myself a little more focused on the task at hand.
Should you only have a certain number of decks? Absolutely not. Play the game the way it makes you happy. Whatever numbers of decks makes you happy to have on hand, to surprise your opponents with, keep it that way.

cool thanks everyone, atleast i dont feel alone in having a few decks at once. Like i said, everyone i know has about half as many decks as me, and i just felt weird having so many, cuz almost every week, everyone would be like "oh, great another NEW deck." so i always felt a little dumb just for making so many. But thanks again everyone, and screw 'em i have a deck box that can fill up to 8 decks in sleeves, so i'll just say that is my maximum lol.

I had upwards of 30+ decks at one point. I have two deck boxes that fit 12 decks in sleeves and they were full and then I had a bunch of other deck boxes that could hold one each. I understand the desire not to take them apart because you like playing them and then if you do take them apart you have to do something with all the cards.
Right now I probably have about 9 decks, but only 2-3 of them are actually played right now. A few are in pieces, most have proxies, only 1 I'd consider taking to an FNM. I think if you have the cards or a good way to make proxies than make all the decks you want! Sometimes I'll build a deck just to see if works. I like the playtester here don't get me wrong, but there is something nicer about being able to play with the actual cards.

You can see from my decklist just how many decks I would make if I had the Infinite Money code for life. djgunn said it best: play the game so that it makes you happy. I routinely have about 16 decks put together, MAYBE one of them is standard legal, and I'll regularly make changes to my decks before my weekly game nights. It keeps my friends from always knowing what I'm up to, and it keeps me on my toes in terms of strategic thinking. Make many decks. Play them all. Have fun doing it.

I have 1 EDH deck, 4 or more for Standard, and I'm building a Modern deck right now, 6 isn't too much at all. I just recently pulled apart what was my 7th deck, and I now plan on building a new one since acquiring cards last night. Brew away, play what's fun.
