How to best utilize big creatures?

Deck Help forum

I've mostly played with burn decks, and some control decks, and in these I've mostly used cheap small creatures. The strategy was simple:

-burn decks: use cheap small creatures and spells to damage player, and use bigger spells to take care of big creatures.

-control decks: counter everything until I have enough mana to start dealing damage through opponents own creatures, burn spells, and some creatures.

Guttersnipe helps in both decks. My decks aren't anything special, but at least I had a strategy in mind.

Now, I would like to build a deck to utilise some of the bigger creatures I own. Obviously the tempo will be slower than my usual burn deck.Bu t how do I go about it? How do I deal with early cheap spells and creatures my opponent deals out ? What are good concepts to keep in mind, and ideas I could use?

I'm still a new player, and while a burn deck was easy for me to take advantage of, I'm not sure how I should go about a deck focused on big creatures and perhaps spells (I think these are called midrange decks?).

Thanks a lot!

Sorry, instead of burn decks I meant to say aggro decks (I believe so anyway!).

Big creatures means big mana. Mana dorks and fetch spells can help out with getting the big creatures going.

Somberwald Sage , Farseek , Chromatic Lantern , Gilded Lotus , card:Avacyn's Pilgrim, Arbor Elf and many others might help you out.

Yes, what you're most likely referring to is typically called mid-range. It's often a deck that involves mana ramping, removal and around 16 big/powerful creature drops. The idea is to ramp and remove key threats during the early game, and then simply stablize and out value them once your big guys hit the board.

If you want to do a control setting you can have counters, removal, maybe some ramp in the form of Chromatic Lantern and Gilded Lotus as TheOne4221 suggested and then 6-10 "bombs" (big creatures with helpful effects).

Thanks for the replies.

I don't think I want to use a control deck with these big creatures. The thing is that I don't know what I want.

What strategies do you guys use in order to best utilise the big guys? Small critters for defence until you have enough mana to bring out the more powerful creatures?

Mana dorks and fetch spells are also good ideas.

The way I do which is more of a control setup is have a few small creatures that can be useful such as (not standard but great example pieces) Spellskite and Solemn Simulacrum . These two help with blocking and advantages then with counters and kill spells you control the board and make sure it is safe to play your big creatures. Also board wipes such as Supreme Verdict can be helpful before dropping your bomb
