Improving American Control
Deck Help forum

My standard deck, as of now, for Theros block is Theros American Control (1st @ FNM), which took first place out of the gate @ FNM. So far my win-cons are: AEtherling x2, Elspeth, Sun's Champion x1, and Assemble the Legion x1, with a second in the side. Ral Zarek could aid in winning, but isn't really a win con on his own... I would like to add another Elspeth in his place, though. My main concern is this...I definitely want to add a Purphoros, God of the Forge . I am running the red already, and it would be silly not to run him along side Elspeth's +1 and Assemble, right? So the question is, where to put him, and also, should I run Heliod, God of the Sun , too, and where?
I am adding another Elspeth...what should I remove for it, though? I am leaning toward Ral Zarek , but is there a better option you can see? I also do see what you mean about Purphoros, though.

I think Ral Zarek or 1 of your Syncopate s would be a good option. You may also consider siding Anger of the Gods for aggro decks, it's easily a wrath one turn earlier against mono r and even r/g.

Yea, Ral has not carried much weight in games as of yet, where Syncopate has countered some very important spells that gave me an edge, so I am thinking Ral will go. Also, Anger of the Gods is just something I don't have at the moment. I plan on it hitting the sideboard as soon as I can get my hands on some of them.

I'm not sure why you want to add a Purphoros, God of the Forge to a control deck, it's an aggro card, it belongs in g/r or mono r or r/w/u pyromancer. I understand its synergy with Elspeth, Sun's Champion , AEtherling and Assemble the Legion but, by itself, it's a dead card. It doesn't do anything without 1 of a total 4 cards in your 60 card deck being in play and doesn't win the game by himself. I'd say nay to Heliod, God of the Sun as well, predominately because you have nothing that I'd remove from your deck to add it. If you want more win cons and consistency, add another Elspeth.
