Is Grixis Still Viable?

Deck Help forum

Hi Everybody!

Just wondering, is Grixis Control still a thing? I know KrazyCaley made it very interesting, but his series kind of disappeared.

Anyway, my take is Bolas' Fun House

+1's and constructive criticisms are more than welcome!

I don't think it was ever not, just no body really runs with those colors.

Oh Grixis is a thing...just got to be able to plan for post rotation. Some of the MAJOR players in the deck are rotating: Pillar of Flame , Searing Spear , Sever the Bloodline , Curse of Death's Hold , Olivia Voldaren , Dissipate , Liliana of the Veil

Hopefully there will be some good replacements for a lot of these. I personally am going to work on a "Grixis Midrange" deck that will use Master of Cruelties as a win con along with others

@ harrydemon117

I'm just glad Doom Blade is back, and that Geist of Saint Traft is leaving. I'll probably start building something new come Theros anyway, but I'm taking this to a tournament tomorrow...

The problem is that grixis control never really had quite the right answers for the popular decks. Having red instead of white denies it hard board wipes and Sphinx's Revelation , which is a must in control decks. You can compensate for that by using red's global burn (Bonfire of the Damned and Mizzium Mortars , etc), however those don't quite fill white's shoes.

Yeah, and while Barter in Blood does a pretty good job of resetting it's not the be all and end all...

It's true that it lacked board wipers, however it could still go one for one until it dropped a win con. Black is the best one for one removal and with things like Dissipate and Syncopate you could counter a Lingering Souls or Voice of Resurgence well enough to stay right in there with the opposing deck.

The biggest problem Grixis had was a turn 2 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben when they were on the play as it set us back a turn and gave them a HUGE advantage.

The Aristocrats could easily be dealt with using Curse of Death's Hold and Izzet Staticaster . Unburial Rites decks could be dealth with using Cremate and counterspells. Burning Earth was something I came across but didn't find a good answer for (other than hand disruption or a counterspell for it)

The "board wipe" I used was Ratchet Bomb recently as it came down early and could be used vs anything
