Keeping Mono Black Standard
Deck Help forum

As of right now, I am currently playing with a mono black control deck Swamp Ass. It works decently well, and it's probably my favorite deck to play with currently (barring perhaps my B/W token deck, which is just more consistent). The issue here is that the only cards in my mainboard that will remain standard come October are and Tragic Slip . Both of which are fantastic, but not really enough to build a deck around. I was wondering if anybody had any experience playing with black control cards from Innistrad or Dark Ascension and whether they could hold up in mono black. I think the deck could still thrive with the arrival of Avacyn Restored. Cards like Appetite for Brains , Killing Wave , and Griselbrand are promising. Human Frailty will be an awesome sideboard card, and I feel like even Harvester of Souls could see some sideboard action. From Innistrad I still haven't played with Sever the Bloodline , Curse of Death's Hold or Heartless Summoning . I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for cards to start gathering in order to keep my deck updated or if you even think mono black control will still be viable (I know a lot of people will tell me to just go U/B if I want to control but I would like to keep it mono). Also, I couldn't really find any suitable cards from Dark Ascension for black control. Please cure my ignorance fellow players!
lol "scars" means the scars block.
Mirrodin Besieged, and New Phyrexia are rotating with Scars of Mirrodin.

Personally, I would go Heartless Summoning route. You could use cards like Bloodgift Demon and some of the high CMC creatures with good abilities that's are a little expensive

Bloodgift Demon and Rune-Scarred Demon are both fairly strong if you go for the Heartless route, Curse of Death's Hold is too amazing not to play at least 2 somewhere in the 75 for control. But it's pretty early to start thinking about rotation, AVR isn't even fully released and there's still 2 more sets to be revealed after that before scars block rotates out (we will see all of Ravnica 2.0 the week before it rotates and most of the important cards earlier than that).

Curse of Death's Hold
is so amazing right now. So many agro heavy decks, you toss 1 or two of them out and BOOM they are shut down.
btw, only scars of mirroden is rotating out, mirroden besieged is staying in standard as far as i believe.
If you wanna go the Heartless Summoning
route, i suggest going with B/U because you can use 4x Grand Architect
4x Phyrexian Metamorph
4x Phantasmal Image
and those 12 cards destroy everyone.
I haven't looked at a lot of the AVR set yet, but from what i've seen with cards like Killing Wave
it's gonna be devastating.
