Looking for a blue creature as a win con.

Deck Help forum

Posted on Jan. 8, 2014, 3:58 p.m. by Deathsycthx

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to the MTG forum and i'm currently trying to form a UW control deck and I do have the good counterspells such as Cryptic command, remand, mana leak and etc. One of my main combos inside will be basically using isochron scepter and imprinting Dawn charm or remand and etc for protection and counter spells and i'm currently looking to find some creatures which I can use as a win con to kill off opponent. I will probably be running vedalken shackle and maybe oblivion stone as well too. Hope to get some suggestions on it.

So far, i am considering Aetherlink, frost titan or consecrated sphinx but i'm looking to see if there are any better suggestions or not. Thank you all for your help in advance. :)

Regards,Peter

What format are we looking at? I'm going to guess Modern, which I don't know much about, but that will help us narrow down your search.

Also since it looks like you're new you can link cards in your comments by using double brackets "[ [ card name ] ]", but without the spaces. So AEtherling is "[ [aetherling] ]", without spaces.

And welcome!

You want to link your cards with doubl brackets on either side, (no space) [ [aetherling] ] for example.

This is modern I'm assuming, maybe casual, if that's the case, either way Emrakul, the Aeons Torn , Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre , Wurmcoil Engine all make good choices also. Celestial Colonnade and Gideon Jura are other more common options for this type of build.

Cryptic Command

Remand

Mana Leak

Isochron Scepter

AEtherling

Oblivion Stone

Vedalken Shackles

Frost Titan

Consecrated Sphinx

Hi guys,

Oh yes. I'm new and thus did not really know the formatting well. My apologies for the lack of linkage. Will do that in future post. Yes. It is in modern format. I actually have lost touch with the game for quite a while ( many years in fact since I was a onslaught, mirrodin block player) and only recently started to come back and thus now, i'm doing a UW control deck.

Is it safe to say that such a UW control is fine with just 6 to 8 creatures? I'm actually also considering Entreat the Angels . I'm not very sure if board sweepers like Wrath of God or Supreme Verdict is necessary or not. This deck is rather dependent on Isochron Scepter and Vedalken Shackles for the control though and I'm actually basing the deck idea around these 2 cards.

Thank you for the warm welcome so far. I appreciate that. :)

U/W Control doesn't even really need creatures. Perhaps instead of a creature, have you considered Elspeth, Knight-Errant ? She kicks ass and she'll win you the game very quickly with a bit of control to back her up.

Since you're running control Supreme Verdict is a must have. It really lets you stabilize against aggro decks that don't kill you by turn 4.

I would say Celestial Colonnade and Wurmcoil Engine are some of your best bets. They're efficient, resilient, and easy to play.

@Zandi, i'm not exactly very familiar with how planewalkers work at the moment but I have seen it so adding planewalker such as Elspeth, Knight-Errant is possible though I probably need a creature to combo with it?

@Jwiley129, would you suggest running 3 or 4 of Supreme Verdict then?

@Jp3ng1nb0y, I'm actually intending to add Celestial Colonnade . Wurmcoil Engine do look great actually. Thx for your suggestion. :)

You can also link people by using the double brackets which will send us notifications that somebody talked about us. It's really helpful sometimes :)

3-4 board wipes in control seems good to me. I know it's a 4-of in the Standard U/W control so I don't see why that should change for Modern U/W control.

I just looked at the decklists for the 2013 World championships, and while no one ran U/W control, there were lots of U/W/R control which ran 2 Supreme Verdict in the sideboard. So maybe just mainboard 2 and put 1-2 in the sideboard for more aggressive matchups? Like I said earlier, I'm not an expert on the Modern meta so I could be wrong.

When a Planeswalker enters the battlefield, it enters with a number of "Loyalty Counters" on it equal to the number in the bottom-right box. From there with Elspeth above, you can add one counter (to put her at 5) to get the listed effect. Once she has 8 or more counters, you can then use her -8 ability and get the listed effect. The catch is you can only use a Planeswalker's ability at Sorcery-speed and once per turn per Planeswalker.

Your opponents' creatures can attack you or your Planeswalker, You can block. If not, your Planeswalker takes damage from creatures attacking it in the form of removing Loyalty counters. If a Planeswalker ever has 0 or less Loyalty, it's dead.

Your Planeswalkers can also be hit by damaging spells, such as Lightning Bolt , if an opponent targets you and declares the redirection of damage to your Planeswalker. Lightning Bolt would hit Elspeth, Knight-Errant for 3 Loyalty counters.

That's how Planeswalkers work in a nut-shell. Obviously, there are always more complex and in-depth rulings, but that'll get you by 90% of the time.

Elspeth is good partly because it's rare for a PW to have to abilities that both add to her Loyalty counters, meaning you're pushing on your opponent fairly hard while she gets closer and closer to her "ultimate" ability. Most Planeswalkers have a +, small -, and big - (see: Jace Beleren , Garruk Wildspeaker , Liliana Vess , Ajani Goldmane , Chandra Nalaar , etc.).

JWiley129 thx for the suggestions. Can you kindly link me to the u/w/r world championship decks for me to take a look and do some reference? Im still trying to catch up and figure things out. Thank you.

Snappy + Vendilion Clique . Maybe even add a Spellstutter Sprite + Mutavault package or a Restoration Angel package.

Deathsycthx - Here are the decklists for the event. Shahar Shenhar was the winner and he ran u/w/r control if you want to look at a specific deck. Keep in mind that these decks were made for this event and probably aren't made for a larger meta.

And like Blakkhand said, Snapcaster Mage is a BEAST in constructed formats, especially with you wanting to reuse counterspells.

I've always liked Baneslayer Angel . Vendilion Clique is pretty hot too though.

Blakkhand, when you said Restoration Angel package, are you referring to the combo of Restoration Angel + Snapcaster Mage ?

JWiley129, can you elaborate more on why Snapcaster Mage is a beast? And also, i saw this card Iona, Shield of Emeria in this 6Teach. Are there any cards that allow us to summon Iona fast or directly from hand or from library w/o having to hard cast it beside the combo mentioned in the deck?

Thanks guys for the suggestions.. :)

Snapcaster Mage is good because you can recur that board wipe if you need one, or you can recur that Remand or that draw spell, it's gotta have a reason to be $20. and something to summon Iona, Shield of Emeria probably Quicksilver Amulet

the3rdH0kage, i see.I know Snapcaster Mage is a good card for sure though I'm still wondering how to use it well still.

JWiley129 and Blakkhand, i made a draft prototype of the deck that I intend to make. Would you guys mind helping me out to check it out and give me some suggestions and ideas on how to improve the deck? Don't mind the lands and sideboard yet as I haven't added them yet. Of course if you guys think the main board is good, I can sure do with some suggestions on what can be used in the sideboard as well. .

My deck can be found: U/W Control with Recursion of Counterspells

Appreciate all the suggestions given so far.. Thank you!
