Making Stormtide Leviathan work

Deck Help forum

My favorite card happens to be Stormtide Leviathan , and I have racked my brain trying to come up with a deck that will abuse his abilities to the fullest. I put it in my simic deck, Stormtide's evolution, but after putting it all together, I am finding that good ol' Stormtide Leviathan sits in my hand until I get three islands out and then, when I cast him, someone kills off my Sapphire Drake and I just neutered my whole fighting force. So, my challenge to you, TappedOut users, is to give me some fresh insight into how I can make a casual deck that works and focuses on this great big, loveable fish.

tons of ways to do it especially in casual. Use High Tide to mana ramp blue. mana ramp with green in general. Quest for Ula's Temple . Gyre Sage mana ramp for simic. run reanimator, mill stormtide out and then bring him back with stuff like Unburial Rites . Heartless Summoning , Axebane Guardian + Galvanic Alchemist + other defenders = infinite mana. Unexpected Results ....all kinds of craziness

Aha! See, i just started playing after RTR came out, and i never even knew about Quest for Ula's Temple ! I will start a new deck based upon these suggestions. Possibly a deep blue sea deck with islandwalkers and my second favorite card, Welkin Tern . ahh, the fearsome welkin tern.

lmao! well you can probably do better than Welkin Tern but thats your call. Merfolk like Stormtide Leviathan . many of them have islandwalk. Master of the Pearl Trident would be the captain. Talrand, Sky Summoner will give you flying tokens for the win. Sea's Claim and/or Spreading Seas is hilarious in casual when people are not running blue. its basically like super cheap land destruction that benefits you for islandwalk. Don't forget about counterspells...and obviously the best one of all Counterspell itself. Hes one of my favorites too.

The result so far is: Stormtide's Rise

I think the mana curve could be a bit wonky, but with Kraken Hatchling and Welkin Tern to get in quickly and Counterspell and the like I should survive until i can get some counters on the quest. Maybe i could find some cheap blue proliferate to help with that?

I think i have it where I want it at. it is a little slow in playtesting, but i think that will be ok for the casual group I am aiming at. Thank you to Rhadamanthus and jmallette1 for your suggestions. If anyone has any suggestions or comments, please leave them for me!

Here's my spin on it: Song of the Leviathan I know you like the Leviathan creature type as well, so I included a couple of them for your enjoyment.

I like it. Definitely a viable option with G/U.

I've got a deck that uses it. It started out as a tricksy blue deck with lots of tempo plays, looting, etc., but I've been letting my friend borrow and play with it, and under her control it's morphed into more of merfolk harass-aggro deck that uses it (and Lorthos, the Tidemaker on the top end to seal the deal.

Spreading Seas is a pretty good card to have in the deck for the early game; it messes with their mana, replaces itself, and lets you make sure they have an island for your islandwalk dudes to start getting in for damage. Halimar Wavewatch is also a great card for this, since it can block tons of things while you're waiting to get a Stormtide down, then you've got a 6/6 islandwalker when you want it.

If you do decide to build a Quest for Ula's Temple deck, be careful, because those are trickier than they seem: finding the right balance between library manipulation, sea-type creatures, and disruptive/tempo cards to stay alive until you get there can take a lot of fiddling around and testing. It's certainly not impossible, but just know that it'll take some effort.

Thanks for the insight MagnorCriol! If you get a chance, could you playtest my iteration and see what you think? I'm finding that it tanks against burn.

Play tested 4 times. Was able to get a Quest for Ula's Temple out from turn 1-3 on all 4 tests, had a Stormtide out by turn 4-5 thanks to Thrummingbird on Turn 2 on my fastest game.
