Marton Stromgald EDH

Deck Help forum

So, I was digging through the older cards at my LGS, and found this gem in one of the boxes... Marton Stromgald seems pretty good, but what can you do to overcome his obvious weakness of being a 1/1 for 4? I'm highly considering doing a mono-red EDH deck with him as the boss if there are sufficient ways to get around it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "get around" it. I mean, there are artifacts like Ruby Medallion and Helm of Awakening to reduce the cost of creatures you play, you could use things like Caged Sun and Gauntlet of Power and Gauntlet of Might for red.

You could use things like Adaptive Automaton or Door of Destinies naming human or knight to buff him that way

Yeah you basically just hit the nail on the head, thanks! Pretty much everything you listed is what I was looking for. Anything else you can think of by chance?

You might think I'm crazy but traditionally it's better to march him to his doom rather than use up spell slots just to keep him from dying, and instead focus on armies and haste.

With mono-red your best bet is maybe stuff like Pyreheart Wolf , Bedlam , War Cadence , or a roundabout way with Fumiko the Lowblood /Goblin Diplomats .

I recommend Rogue's Passage since it doesn't take up a spell slot.

There's always equipment like Whispersilk Cloak , Executioner's Hood , Prowler's Helm , and probably some others I can't think of off the top of my head.

Thanks for all the tips so far, I really can't wait to get this together and sleeve it up! I just wanted to find a way to get Marton Stromgald out of the danger zone. Champion's Helm , and other good hexproof things like Swiftfoot Boots should help alleviate that. But I feel like Gauntlet of Power + Gauntlet of Might + Caged Sun would be necessities not only for the +1/+1, but all the additional mana to drop late game on something like a Banefire .
