Merieke Ri Berit EDH

Deck Help forum

Posted on June 10, 2012, 9:51 p.m. by mcgeej3

I want to make a ED control deck with Merieke where I am untapping her constantly or bouncing her back to my hand. I want this to be competetive but fun (no insta-winning combos or silly things like that). Open to sub-themes at this point if they seem like they could work.

Looking for starting places. While I look around I was wondering if anyone knew anything off hand that would help.

Appreciate it.

As I look into things I have a question.

If you have a morph card face-down in play and then target it with something like Momentary Blink or Cloudshift does it come back into play as the morphed card?

If yes this could be useful.

If you Momentary Blink or Cloudshift a morphed card, the card will be revealed to all players and returned to the battlefield face-up. Note that this will not trigger any "when ~ is turned face-up" abilities.

As for the deck, Esper is a reasonably flexible color combination. What kinds of themes/subthemes appeal to you most? What style of play do you have?

Sorry for double-post

My primary EDH deck is Sharuum the Hegemon (again esper, but obviously its artifact love). I like to keep my playstyle varied depending on the deck to keep things interesting - so there's no particular style I feel I fall into/look for. For this deck I'm looking for a solid control deck using Merieke Ri Berit to keep my opponents fields from getting out of hand (though tapping/taking control of their creatures/destroying them). I've looked into untapping/bouncing Merieke cards like Mistmeadow Witch and Thousand-Year Elixir which are pretty much auto-in. The morph idea sounded interesting if I could pull it off, but like I said I'm at an early stage and was just looking for any and all ideas for this deck.

The Gilded Drake + Mistmeadow Witch interaction is right at home here.

Definitely look at some of the staple counterspells like Hinder , Mindbreak Trap , Counterspell , Cryptic Command , Rewind , and maybe Spell Crumple (and if you're feeling fancy there's Pact of Negation , Force of Will , and Mana Drain ).

Basic draw power from Phyrexian Arena and Rhystic Study . Consecrated Sphinx and Necropotence offer some more bang for your buck.

Ertai, the Corrupted is nice with creature theft - sac their creature to counter their spell.

card:Minamo, School at Water's Edge and City of Shadows are obvious inclusions for your land base.

maybe Sword of the Paruns will be helpful here and Mind Over Matter if you have the card draw using peeps like Arcanis the Omnipotent (my fave blue creature just FYI lol) and the card draw Epoch suggested will go great too. i would run some wraths just in case of course the classics Damnation and Wrath of God , my personal favourites Rout offers more versatility for the cost of extra mana and of course the ever amazing Decree of Pain . also use tutors Demonic Tutor , Vampiric Tutor , Diabolic Tutor , Rune-Scarred Demon is excellent IMO then you should auto include Angel of Despair and Vindicate too

I just created an account to comment here; I am also currently designing a Merieke EDH.

There are a few cards I really enjoy running in any blue EDH I build -- they aren't necessarily OP in this format, and my group is extremely casual (so I can't say if this is worth-while in your meta or if you need to run more refined synergies; we tend to run cheaper $$ cards with accessible counters to encourage engaging and dramatic games).

It all starts with card:Sensei's Divining Top, a great card for any EDH. Combo-ing with that, I also run Magus of the Future (for excessive card advantage and tricksy sorting / playing of cards from my deck), Counterbalance (not that good in EDH, but I run it anyways), and Long-Term Plans (as a budget tutor).

None of the components require one another to function, but when two or more are on the battlefield at once, the recursive card advantage is quite the advantage.

I also find Venser, the Sojourner , old Liliana Vess , and Contagion Engine to offer good synergies, and further recursive control and card advantage.

Other than that, I don't have much built yet besides cards that allow recursive untapping, and additional creatures with tap abilities. The cards I have picked so far are: Freed from the Real , Vigean Graftmage , card:Pemmin's Aura, and Sky Hussar for untapping, and Minister of Impediments , Royal Assassin , Rimewind Taskmage , Vedalken Certarch , Bloodline Keeper  Flip and Cemetery Reaper for creatures with decent tap abilities (Taskmage also falls under the "sources of untap" category).

Hopefully you like some of my ideas :D

FAKE EDIT: I also never leave home without at least bringing Oblivion Stone , Rout and card:Akroma's Vengeance for mass removal. It's always safe to assume things aren't going your way, and run some sort of back up to really mess up your opponents ;)

I've been working on a Merieke EDH deck myself take a look and see if there's anything you might want to use deck:edh-merieke-ri-berit-merieke-the-merciless-siren.
