Mill in Standard, Aggro/midrange or Control?

Deck Help forum

I kind of want to run a standard mill list, but I am not sure the direction to take, I definitely want to try it in a control format, but it seems midrange might be the best option. Any thoughts on which direction to go and suggestions for cards, colors, etc. I am sort of thinking either esper control or BUG midrange (to take advantage of Thragtusk and Deathrite Shaman . I really want to try and run something fun and competitive. thanks!

I think that Mill is a viable method of 'support' in standard, as well as an alternate win-con. But I don't think it's yet reached the point of being the main win method for a deck.

Creatures like Consuming Aberration , or card:Jace's Phantasm, Wight of Precinct Six make good use of mill, while packing a powerful punch for their mana cost.

Deathrite Shaman certainly gets some additional power from milling, but does not require Green for it to be useful. I think Esper is probably the better option for a 3-colour deck, giving you access to things like Detention Sphere , card:Sphinx's Revelation Terminus and Obzedat, Ghost Council

Green tends to be better with self-mill (also viable), with things like Boneyard Wurm , Mulch , or Grisly Salvage .

Jace, Memory Adept makes mill very plausible all by himself. Mind Grind Mind Sculpt also good.

Have a look at Trepanation Blade , slap it on a Consuming Aberration , that means you cast Mind Grind to mill for x land, then x +1 with Consuming Aberration effect, then x+2 when you attack with Consuming Aberration .

Also, I'd be tempted to put a couple of Elixir of Immortality in there, keep you going longer, and put all your instant/ sorcery back in the deck to mill/ control with again.

And Black Knight works well as a quick creature to keep the enemy occupied while you set up a win condition.

That's why my deck is BU, not standard legal, but the idea might help you: Casual Mill
