Mono Green Mana Ramp (Gatecrash)

Deck Help forum

Pretty fast mono-green mana ramp deck.

First Turn - Forest, Arbor Elf.

Second Turn - Forest, Gyre Sage with Forced Adaptation.

Third Turn - Forest, Elvish Archdruid.

4th turn - Forest, now you should have 11 mana to fool around with. Gyre Sage is a 5/6 , Arbor Elf is 2/2 and you should be getting ready to lay down Primordial Hyrda that is gonna come in as a 9/9. Tap Arbor Elf to open up a forest Just in case you wanna have one of your Instants handy on your opponent's turn. Or If you have either Rancor or another Forced Adaptation you wanna use.

5th Turn - Primordial Hydra is an 18/18 with trample, Gyre Sage is a 6/7. You have plenty of mana at you side, and you should be swinging for lethal. Even if they block both Gyre Sage and Primordial Hydra, you still got the trampla damage in.

Now, I'm sure someone is gonna find a flaw in this deck list but that's why I'm posting it. SO PLEASE GIVE ME SOME FEEDBACK. I wanna make this deck perfect. Plus, if anyone has any suggestions... I NEED SOME ANTI CONTROL. That's all anyone plays at my local store...

In Magic Christmas Land, you'll have 11 mana on turn-4.

More realistically, you'll be using Farseek and Verdant Haven to ramp.

Because if you're playing a mono-colored deck after GTC, you're doing it wrong.

This requires that you start with the perfect 7 cards and draw into the perfect 2 cards following that.

Also, if your opponent has any sort of removal, countermagic, or discard spell, this falls to shit.

You'd be much better off following less janky ramp strategies that are far more consistent and don't blow your entire hand in three turns.

And, honestly, Primordial Hydra isn't that good. Sure, an 18/18 trample on turn-5 may seem good, but it's really too big of a target to get any work done. That's why you've never seen the stupid thing in any Standard Top 8s, ever.

Well now wait a minute, I've had Primordial Hydra win me a few fnm matches and while it does become a big target all you need is to draw a Sheltering Word and its very conceivable to have a huge Hydra hit for big and if somebody wants to waste a board wipe in the early game because you have something huge out then that's one less board wipe you have to worry about later. Also, why are you "doing it wrong" running one color? Yea these sets are aimed towards multi-colored decks but they aren't the end all be all, I have a few mono-colored decks I'd put up against any multi-colored deck. I respect everybodies opinions on here but your assumptions are a bit far reaching, at least to me. All of that being said this deck could do more to protect itself, at the very least you need a strong sideboard... I'd suggest Sheltering Word , Oak Street Innkeeper , and maybe Bramblecrush to help with a tap happy Tamiyo, the Moon Sage I'm sure there are more and will be more things coming to help protect green against controlish things :)

You're doing it wrong because you stand nothing to lose and a lot to gain by playing multiple colors.

Also, if I board-wipe to kill an Elvish Archdruid , Primordial Hydra , Gyre Sage , and Arbor Elf , I'd call that a good board-wipe.

And even if I'm hitting only Primordial Hydra with the board-wipe, that's essentially a 4-mana Doom Blade . At worst, it's still a 1-for-1 spell.

Learn how economics play into Magic.

You may have use P. Hydra to win a match or two at FNM, but that means nothing. Any schmo can win with anything at the right FNM. When you win a PTQ with a Primordial Hydra , hit me up.

Hahahaha I'm sorry but reinforcing your points in a matter of fact manner doesn't make them anymore true or false and idk a specific number but I'd put a lot on only 20-30% of people that play mtg go to any type of ptq (at most). The majority of us probly play casual or at fnm so before you go getting all pro tour on me please realise I wasn't trying win anybody a major event, merely stating that you saying with certainty that thier deck idea would fail is false itself... like you said, any "schmo" can win with a primordial Hydra, why not this guy or girl? And I started playing during the Urza block, I think I may have picked up some "Magic economics" along the way ;)

@ zandl It's not only about high level events, a lot of people on here only play fnms anyway. But to the Op, I will agree with him there, I think you should also run black, which would give you access to a ton of destroy spells, Duress to make them discard that Supreme Verdict that would hurt you, Golgari Charm to protect against board wipes, and Corpsejack Menace which makes your hyrda build twice as fast.

Sorry to the whoever the MTG Pro is, I didn't mean to offend you with my deck list haha. I'm not that experienced of a player. I just started with the RtR Block at FNM a couple months ago. Besides that, I haven't played magic in almost 6 years.

But that's besides the point.. Okay so I got this deck posted on 3 different forums so I could get more feedback and pretty much everyone is telling me I need more draw power and another heavy hitter to pull out. One guy said Worldspine Wurm , which I for one think is an awesome card but still almost too expensive mana wise even for a ramp deck. I mean, at least with the Hydra I can drop him as a 3/3 on the 3rd turn in a worse case scenario and he would still grow to be a 6/6 the next turn. And for draw power I'm considering using Garruk, Primal Hunter or Elvish Visionary . And one other thing a person said was to add in card:Ranger's Guile to protect my fatties.

Never said I was a pro. I was just trying to make the deck better. Sorry for being the only person heee with constructive criticism who doesn't sugarcoat the elephant in the room.

And if you think a board-wipe to kill off a single, threatening creature is a waste, then your concept of the game is skewed to begin with.

Garruk, Primal Hunter is an excellent choice for drawing and the card:Ranger's Guile is another excellent idea :) you could also think about throwing in Wild Beastmaster , throw a Revenge of the Hunted on her with a few other creatures on your side of the board and more times than not that's game... also, maybe Craterhoof Behemoth as a late game monster :)

All I have to say to this is, 224/224 Primordial Hydra , it got Pacifism played on it the first turn it was out, and I drew into a Naturalize late game, with it at 224 counters. At a FNM, in a mono green deck. The whole reason this was possible was Elderscale Wurm , so now I suggest it to you.

I also forgot to mention I ran 2x Akroma's Memorial , it was mainly an elf deck, and is now Simic Elves

24/24 unblockable/hexproof primordial to swing for game by turn 7. Hydra is pretty good in the right mana ramp. Swing for 72 the next turn if that doesn't finish them off.

thatgreenguy says... #15

With the introduction of Theros it can swing for 72 unblockable hexproof by turn 6
