So I'm gonna design a standard R/G monsters deck but I'm really new to standard and not sure on the amount of manadorks I need for it I believe I need at least 8 but not sure and I know about two (elvish mystic and sylvan cartyid probably butchered that spelling but you know what I'm talking about) thanks for helping!

Red/Green Monsters, as a mechanic, is always helped by Satyr Hedonist . You are correct about Sylvan Caryatid . Another choice that has a sac mechanic (which is a big factor, and a good use, for creatures like Nemesis of Mortals and Graverobber Spider [if you're splashing black]) is Burnished Hart . And yes, that was a sub-parenthetical clause. Likewise, get some Arbor Colossus to put in there to deal with flyers and enhance devotion if you want to use that one creature who adds green mana equal to your devotion to green (can't remember the name, too lazy to look up. Or maybe a Reverent Hunter or two.

Just playing.

But seriously. Stormbreath Dragon , and Polis Crusher are good. There are many different things you can use. What is your budget? That is a big factor when figuring out which way to go.

Didgeridooda- Good call on the Polis Crusher . I always start with a plan for under 100 dollars for a deck. I figure, if they come back and say, "Why are you lowballing me? Money is no object!" I'll tell them, "4 Xenagos walkers and 4 Xenagos gods, with 4 Stormbreath dragons to spare!"

I've made four competition ready decks, all under 100 dollars. That's of course assuming standard, which most FNMs are. At any rate, good suggestions!

Of course, once all the badass Gruul cards cycle out, you'll see a spike in Polis Crusher's price.

The way I've done my budget is weird I don't like spending more than 25.00 dollars on a card (see weird) but I'm gonna add something to the mix R/G and white splashed monsters go ahead think I'm crazy but my idea might work I'll post the deck when it's done

He is made to dominate standard right now. With G/R on the rise, he will hold a heavy presence in many successful decks to come. I should pick up a few playsets of him because I think he will get to around 5 dollars or so. That is if G/R stays dominant.

Lordofevolution that is not that restrictive of a budget for standard.

Elvish Mystic and Sylvan Caryatid are about the only mana producers you'll need, though you'll want a playset of both. With only one in play, you can get out Polukranos, World Eater by turn 3. The top of your curve in this deck is about 5 or 6, depending on what you run, and you only need a few mana producers out to achieve that level of mana early on. Afterward, it's almost all excess, as unless you have a way of drawing more creatures (e.g. Domri Rade and Garruk, Caller of Beasts , which I'd highly recommend running), there's no sink for that mana (unless you're playing something like Savageborn Hydra or Mistcutter Hydra . Since you're new(ish?) to standard, the former sees little to no play (it doesn't have protection from blue or haste, so generally the Mistcutter is a better choice), and the Mistcutter is generally boarded in against Mono-Blue Devotion and Azorius Control. Against Mono-Black Devotion, it just dies, and in my opinion, that's the most popular deck in standard right now. It probably changes depending on your meta, but it's won the most tournaments recently. Also, by mana sink, I mean something with an X cost, though that's likely not the best definition. If you want it to mean 'enough mana to almost empty your hand,' it's generally not necessary to run out 2 huge creatures per turn, and is often impossible, because you'll need too many mana producers to do it, and end up without the big creatures you want to play with them.). Personally, I wouldn't run something like Karametra's Acolyte because of the lack of the need for that much mana (in most cases) and its high cost. Why put this in your deck and play it when you can play something else that's much stronger with the same mana cost? However, if you want to run Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx , you might want to consider Voyaging Satyr , because it can untap it, creating insane amounts of mana. I haven't seen that as much recently (I believe because of, once again, the lack of a mana sink), but it's an option. But I wouldn't go over 8 mana producers total. If you do, you lose too many card slots and you'll end up drawing all mana producers and nothing to play with their mana, like I mentioned earlier.

25 per card?! I am currently accepting donations for the "Please help TheNinjaJesus win Friday Night Magic" Foundation. For the low, low, cost of a playset of Blood Baron of Vizkopa and Brimaz, King of Oreskos , you can help this dirt-poor recent college graduate win his way to self-sufficiency, where placing first in FNM facilitates winning first in FNM. Operators are standing by. Please contribute today.

Also, TheAshenKnight- I thought the Monstrous was supposed to be the mana sink...

March 14, 2014 12:24 a.m.

Ok so I'm thinking 13 manadorks (too much?)

3 Elvish Mystic

3 Sylvan Caryatid

3 Satyr Hedonist

4 Burning-Tree Emissary

Man I suck at standard

Didgeridooda says... #15

That is a little bit heavy. You are not running devotion so Burning-Tree Emissary is not really necessary.

I have a standard Gruul monster deck, and I think all the mana dorks you need are 4x Sylvan Caryatid and Elvish Mystic . I also have 4x Burning-Tree Emissary , which I don't consider a mana dork, because it provides 2 devotion for Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Xenagod, and it's basically free, so why not.
