So since necropotence's oracle says when you discard exile it, will cards like http://tappedout.net/mtg-card/putrid-imp/ work?

obviously not the threshold effect but the discard engine lol just to be clear

Putrid Imp

Necropotence

For reference

I dont understand the question. Are you asking if it still gets flying. Putrid Imp is not really an engine

To my best knowledge, you do discard the card, and once it goes to the graveyard, it instantly gets exiled. Putrid Imp can still get flying by discarding a card, because you have still discarded it. Necropotence has a triggered ability, characterised by the words "whenever you discard a card" (I'm talking about the orcale text on the gatherer website). It's only going to trigger after the event actually happens.

Its the same kind of thing for tokens going to the graveyard. If a token creature goes to the graveyard, things that care about creatures going to the graveyard that turn will consider the tokens. Even though, the tokens just stop existing. An example would be Flesh Allergy .

Hopefully I made sense.

Even if [[necropotence]'s ability was a replacement effect instead of a triggered ability, it wouldn't counter Putrid Imp 's ability. You still activated it, so it will eventually resolve.
