Need help finding a budget deck

Deck Help forum

Posted on Sept. 25, 2012, 11 p.m. by binarybacon

Hello all! I'm new to MTG. I need help finding a budget deck (10$-20$) that will be ok in standard post rotation. Not expecting it to the end all be all, but simply have a chance against most other decks. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

As I'm still learning to play the game, mono is probably best. Thanks for suggestions!

Decks that are usually fairly cheap are Mono Red Burn decks that use cards like Searing Spear to deal direct damage to players in order to win. However, it is difficult to build a competitive Standard deck without spending a significant amount of money.

delver is a good deck that can work in budget decks so I would look into cheap cards and see how they all work with each other.

I have a very good deck using delver and flashback cards with Burning Vengeance for burn control and with Izzet Charm it makes it highly playable again.

A mono green beats deck might be decent, you play cheap fast creatures with Rancor and Revenge of the Hunted .

Unfortunately the other common options are pretty expensive (at least for your budget), Red deck wins will max out that budget with just a playset of Vexing Devil

I would suggest getting an event deck or intro pack and working from there. Intro packs are 15, events 20-25. They're a good place to start.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I currently have a full play set of Delver of Secrets  Flip with Invisible Stalker that I can experiment with other cheap cards. I appreciate @swiftdeath for mentioning a way to play around not having Snapcaster Mage .

I agree on green aggro. Seems like I could throw a bunch of green creatures with ramp together and have a super cheap deck.

I already have a red deck built that literally uses no creatures, since i can't afford the previously mentioned Vexing Devil . It pretty much just uses spells/miracles. It can win, but if it doesn't draw right or it gets countered a bunch there's no chance.

Also what do you guys think of this when RVR is released? Had this idea after seeing Pack Rat and thought aggro deck?

x4 Pack Rat x4 Typhoid Rats x4 Ravenous Rats x4 Drainpipe Vermin

Seeing as you have delver and stalker you could do a "humans" blue tempo. All you would need is the fairly cheap card:Runechanter's Pike and a few Silver-Inlaid Dagger s combine that with some counter magic some draw power and some Unsummon s and you got yourself a deck. Delver of Secrets  Flip is a human when he is Insectile Aberration  Flip  Flip too so he will get the full bonus from Silver-Inlaid Dagger .

I have 2 Silver-Inlaid Dagger would have to purchase the card:Runechanter's Pike they're currently around 1$-2$ so that's fine. Have any other humans you would like to suggest or just stick with the 2?

Elgaud Shieldmate and Tandem Lookout are both worth considering for budget purposes. There are a few other good blue humans to capitalize on the daggers. I would buy 4x pikes and see I you can get 2 more daggers.

Can get a playset of both Elgaud Shieldmate and Tandem Lookout for .49 cents each. Fantastic suggestions. I will look through all the blue humans and try to come up with something.

Plus blue is my favorite color to play, simply because I'm coming from Pokemon and I miss all the draw power I could put in decks.

Wingcrafter is also good. Very good. So the point of the deck is to drop whatever early pressure you can then attach equipments and counter/unsummon things that could get in your way.

I would go with 4x delver 4x wingcrafter 4x stalker with 4x pikes and 4x daggers then fill the rest with instants/sorceries that can help you or hinder them.

Your main win con will usually be stalker with a pike/dagger and a bunch of spells in your grave.

Wingcrafter Another cheap goody :-). I really appreciate all the help. I'm going to search through all the sorcery/instants and get back with you. It will take me a little while lol.

Little heavy on creatures for delver to flip all the time but actually pretty good for a budget deck. Looks like it could do pretty good v.s. a lot of decks. Just keep in mind that you aren't really going to care about your life total but remember that in your second main phase you can equip the pikes to an untapped creature who can block. (If you have nothing to do with your mana.) Also, don't forget that the pikes give first strike.

I would probably do -2 tandem and + 2 think twice

Since Delver of Secrets  Flip on the flip and Invisible Stalker are both unblockable, I think I'll do -4 Wingcrafter +2 Tandem Lookout +2 Think Twice -2 Mass Appeal (Not needed with all that draw support) + 2 Sleep

Would probably be good to get something in here to destroy enhancements/perma but can't think of anything.

lol with 4 Sleep Silent Departure Unsummon I may not get attacked that often ;-)

Now that I look at the cards I should probably just keep the Wingcrafter in there and get rid of the Tandem Lookout Simply for mana efficiency. I'll keep working on this, really appreciate all your thoughts on it @Othenolses

Alright I'm going to stick with +4 Wingcrafter and -4 Tandem Lookout until I can afford +4 Snapcaster Mage
