Oloro, Ageless Ascetic

Deck Help forum

So in an attempt to build a good 1v1 French List deck that could handle my meta of all blue all the time (The last tournament had 8 decks, 7 of which had blue in them [3 of which were Geist of Saint Traft ] ) I decided to convert my Sharuum the Hegemon deck into Oloro, Ageless Ascetic

Finally got to test it out a couple times last night and good lord is Oloro the bomb nuts!

My current build is I Don't Eat Anything That Casts a Shadow and it still has some vestiges of the old artifact-based build that need to come out, and about 8-10 counterspells that need to go in, but it's absurd how resilient that lifegain makes you.

In one match against a really aggressive Doran, the Siege Tower I ended up at 1 life before stabilizing, willingly put myself -back- to 1 life twice via fetchlands and still came back for a win.

The deck still has a lot of space for improvement (I find myself without a counterspell way too many times, I have 8 more en route from trades) and this is really my first foray into proper blue control play, but if anybody is looking for a good Esper general, you really shouldn't underestimate what 2 life a turn actually adds up to.

I agree! I recently built a lifegain deck around him and I love it! In a 4 player game I was well over 80 life before anyone dealt damage to me. Love it!

I would recommend adding the suite of esper sphinx's. I run a similar deck and they are insane. Sphinx of the Steel Wind adds to your goal of gaining life and is a sick blocker. Sphinx Summoner , Sharuum the Hegemon and Magister Sphinx add great utility and dropping an opponent to 10 life is big in stopping attacks.

their combination with Intuition is very strong too.

They all cost waaaay too much for 1v1 in a format that bans sol ring, mana crypt, mana vault and tinker.

Sharuum used to be the general of the deck, but it has barely any artifacts anymore. Dropping someone to 10 from 30 isn't nearly as good as from 40 and 7 mana is again, way too high.

I'm always happy for suggestions, so keep them coming, but 1v1 is a very specific beast where a lot of the multiplayer cards don't hold up nearly as well.

To resolve Sphinx of the Steel Wind or Magister Sphinx I feel like I'd need to have at least two counterspells and thus at least 3 or 4 extra mana back to try and resolve them. They'd spark a counter war against virtually any deck I might face.

Whoever moved the thread to Deck Help...I guess the tone of my post was off? I didn't ask for deck help, nor was I looking for deck help. I was wanting to discuss Oloro as an EDH general, and Esper EDH as a thing...

Okay, I guess this is a deck help thread now.

My group actually banned Oloro in our EDH games because he was just too strong against any of the decks we could feasibly make.

Hehe, yeah, my group is pretty cutthroat.

Last week was Geist, Geist, Geist, Zur, Rafiq Infect, Dervei, Wydwen, Damia

Yeah that seems like a pretty tough group of decks. Really my most powerful one, which I'm still assembling, is a Maelstrom Wanderer deck.
