Paying Activated Abilities

Lets say I attack wih both a Moltensteel Dragon and a Furnace Whelp and I have 5 untapped mana and my opponent can only block one, so he chooses the Moltensteel Dragon , can i then pump the furnace whelp with 5 mana as the damage goes through or is this incredibly erroneous. thank you.

Yes you can do that. You can also Giant Growth or Mutagenic Growth either one based on the other player's choice.
