Planeswalkerless control: is it worth it?

Thing is: I like control decks a lot. I find them elegant, stylish, yada yada yada. HOWEVER, I find it really tough to build one for one reason: I lack the planeswalkers. They are rather expensive around here (I'm in Brazil, btw) and that makes it painful to get them. I like competitive playing and have chosen to go aggro, ever since I got back to playing this year after being away from MtG since 1999 (damn I feel old), mainly due to the cost of cards. Now, Is it worth playing control without the planeswalkers (and the revelation)? Is it even possible to have a competitive control deck without them?
They provide so much resources advantage over time and it is exactly what control generally need. It's doable but you're lacking a huge part of the deck without it; it serves so many function in a control deck.
You just won't have the very best deck out there.

If you don't use Planeswalkers you will likely need a repeatable source of advantage. Whether that is a land/creature with an awesome activated ability or some kind of recursion. I personally don't think the current Standard environment is good for Planeswalkerless control, but I have been toying with an Elite Arcanist deck idea that Silence s the opponent every turn.

On a competitive level: 'no'.
