What exactly is a playable card? I'm new and need some tips/tricks to building a successful deck. Thanks!

Standard rotates every October and is the 6 most recent sets plus the Magic 2011 (or what ever year it is) So right now Zendikar, Worldwake, Rise of the Eldrazi, M11, Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged, New Phyrexia, and M12 are legal.

No my computer screwed up bad and sent all those messages.
ok and any of the cards from these sets are currently in standard.
* Zendikar (until September 30. 2011)* Worldwake (until September 30. 2011)* Rise of the Eldrazi (until September 30. 2011)* Magic 2011 (until September 30. 2011)* Scars of Mirrodin* Mirrodin Besieged* New Phyrexia* Magic 2012 (effective July 15, 2011)* Innistrad (effective September 30, 2011)I suggest you look around the site see what you like color wise. White is generally easier for new players to pick up on.

I guess what i'm asking is what are good cards for my first deck. bman....if you could check out my deck i posted that would be great! Thanks =)

Magic is not just a game of good cards and bad cards, you need to have a purpose in an entire deck. Just start reading cards and figuring things out. Try and build some decks and see how they do but plain asking what is a good card won't really work.

Standard is a rotating block. Usually, it's the Core set (M11, M12, ect) and the two predeceasing blocks. Currently, standard play allows most cards from The entire Zendikar Block, M11, The entire Mirodin Block, and M12. Once Innistrad, the new block comes out, Zendikar Block will drop out of standard, and Innistrad will kick in.
