Playtest grinding for FNM

Deck Help forum

Posted on Feb. 27, 2014, 5:25 p.m. by Servo_Token

Hey guys,

So tomorrow night i'm visiting a new shop with some friends for FNM. I have no idea what kind of decks that I will be playing. Therefore, I threw together your basic GW Aggro deck and will be piloting that.

I'd like to get some lists from you guys that I can test it against. I'd like to get a decent coverage of the main decks in standard, and of course janky homebrews.

When you leave your deck, please also leave a short description of how the deck is meant to work, and a basic overview of how to pilot it if it's something you don't think that I will have seen before.

I'll try to leave reviews of the games, but I can't promise that i'll get to everyone. Thanks!

check my deck list, my esper, b/w and r/b decks are current standard, b/w is midrange, esper is almost the typical esper list with whip and obzedat and r/b is my aggro brew, meant to deal with local decks.

Azorius heroic- play creatures, enchant them, swing. Leave mana open intelligently for Daxos and the protection spells.

Pain Seer Dimir Tempo build. Hopefully, raw card advantage wins, but not very consistent.

Good luck with the tests!

The deck is typical Esper control. BBoV is the main win con, Elspeth and Jace are secondary win cons, Jace is used primarily for milling if the board is stalled, or pure card draw in other spots. Otherwise, its pretty straight forward. Let me know what you think!

Just try to get out mana dorks and big creatures fast. Overload Cyclonic Rift or Ultimate Kiora, the Crashing Wave and win.

A nice, simple, infinite combo homebrew. Generally don't play any of the pieces unless you are about to win, be smart with your tempo plays and keep protection up when about to combo off if you can.

White weenies splash a few enchantments with a lifegain sub theme. Super aggressive, win hard and win fast. And gain some life, don't forget that.

Literally all you're supposed to do is sit around countering and bouncing things until you mill them out with Codex Shredder . For game 2 though, slide in the Jace, Memory Adept s.

Your deck just wasn't able to put out the early turn threats that it needed to race mine, which was just about the only option in this matchup. It could potentially tough it out for the long haul, but with my build there usually just isn't a long haul.

raithe000

Against the hexproof build, I considered this one a draw. You won game 1, I won game two, and game three got up to turn 30, so I just simul-scooped. When we are both swinging in with huge threats that also happen to have lifelink, and neither side having much removal, there's really no telling where the game goes. Didn't play against your other deck as i'm trying to get to everyone.

TheDevicer

The deck was very fast, but not big enough to maintain a threat past turn 4. Loxodon Smiter did work here.

kmcree

Another one where it was back and forth on the matches. If you got your good hand, you won, if you didn't I would. Blood baron is a tank, but i'm not actually sure if I need to be afraid of him for this tourny.

Lord007

As i've seen with everyone else that tests against your deck, it's all up in the air on whether or not you can pull off the combo by turn 4-5. I think you're getting closer to solving that issue though.

I am just about to get to the rest.

Also, what do you guys think about Murder Investigation in place of Soldier of the Pantheon in my build? It offers some wrath protection, and gives me a way around those big green decks that i'm finding impossible to beat.

InconspicuousPotato

Your deck won everything because nykthos. Very good build.

Dalektable

Again, my deck was just able to outrace yours on every game. The Bigger creatures seem to be a real pain against your build.

February 27, 2014 9:47 p.m.

Lord007 says... #17

ThatBlueMage I'd put Murder Investigation in side if you can fit it in. It doesn't seem like a mainboard-able card to me. As for my combo deck, do you have any suggestions? Any cards you didn't like to see/any you wanted to see more of?

February 27, 2014 10:47 p.m.

Lord007 says... #18

Also, Rootborn Defenses in your deck is anti-wrath so you may not even need it.

February 27, 2014 10:49 p.m.

Servo_Token says... #19

I hated seeing Negate , obviously, though that would have gotten sided out. Also thought that Thoughtflare was a dead card.

I did see that in your SB you had stuff to cover for them, so I think you're all fine on that front.

Also, I took out the soldiers and put in 4 Soul Tithe because reasons. It's a decent tempo card, and it's much needed removal for certain matchups. I'm also going to be taking out the gifts from my SB and putting in 2 more Murder Investigation .

Focuses on getting a small creature or 2 out quickly and then making them powerful using madcap skills, battle tricks and heroic abilities before finally going in for the kill with effects like the trample on Anax and Cymede , by giving a powerful card double strike with Boros Charm , or just getting them within 4 life and using Boros Charm to burn them.
