Redirecting damage to a planeswalker question.

I understand that to attack a planeswaker with combat, I must declare it. With non-combat, I target the player then redirect to the planeswalker.

My question is, if my opponent has low life, and I swing in with my creatures for the win, can he instead force his planeswalker to take the damage, therefore saving him?

To me it seems like he making his planeswalker block, which he can't do. I just wanted to make sure, just in case I was missing anything.

Nope, he most certainly cannot do that.

Planeswalkers can only be used during your own main phases anyway.

I thought he couldn't do that. Thanks for the help and for confirming it.
