Removing Nocturnus from Vamp deck

Deck Help forum

So in the past I desided to splurge on a pair of Vampire Nocturnus because i thought they were badass. I started making a deck to take as much advantage of him as possible, while still running it as Rakdos so I can use the red vamps too. Sadly Im starting to feel like Nocturnus is under performing and I'm running into issues mana fixing for him more often than I am actually using him to swing for big. Any thoughts on whether or not I should drop him and for what? The deck is Castle Stromkirk

I would think a better alternative would be to lessen the amount of mono-red in your deck, so that you can get rid of the mountains, and stick with land that gets you black when needed.

Stromkirk Noble's are a good 1 drop, but suck if you draw it past turn 2. With the inception of Gatecrash, Shadow Alley Denizen can give any creature evasion, and it works well even if you get it a little later than the first 2 turns.

I've never liked Rakish Heir... 3 mana 2/2, that has a situational triggered ability... not enough power for it's cost in todays Standard meta. - Replacing them with a couple Underworld Connections and increasing the number of other vamps, like Bloodline Keeper  Flip, and/or Vampire Nighthawk could work better.

The Underworld Connections also assists Vampire Nocturnus by allowing you to pay 1 life when you have a non-black card on the top of your library in order to get another attempt to get a black card there.

Leaving in one mountain, and using 1-2 Evolving Wilds can also help. This lets you get the Mountain if you need the red, but also works the same as Underworld Connections, in that it gives you another chance at bringing a black card to the top.

Rayenous makes some great points above. I agree that Shadow Alley Denizen can be a fantastic card and Underworld Connections will help you in flooding the board with cards because it gives you a 'second chance' to draw what you need.

alright i tried to do what you guys suggested. I changed the deck name to Castle Stromkirk 2.0 not sure how effective it is yet, but it looks a lot more Vampire Nocturnus friendly at least.

Should I be considering Mutilate now that I am so focused on black?
