Shutting His Mouth

Deck Help forum

Posted on Nov. 3, 2011, 10:07 a.m. by valkyria

I have a friend who brags that he is unbeatable. I would once and for all like to shut his mouth and prove I a worthy challange to him. I don't have much cards as i am a beginner but the cards i do have are quite powerful as noted on the MTG main sight so here is what i have so far. All my cards i do own are in standard format, and i would like to keep it that way.

Name of Deck: STFU

of cards:60

Colors in Deck:W/U/G

Land7 White7 Blue7 Green

CreaturesNone(yet)

Enchantments4 Pacifism

Sorcery1 Bramblecrush1 Caravan Vigil

Instants1 Mana Leak2 Naturalize1 Redirect3 Unsummon

That is all i have so far. As a newbie at the game I ask you to help me, to shut his mouth once and for all. Any help will be gratefully respected and any negative feedback will be ignored. Thank you.

2 questions...

  1. What deck does he play? Colors? Theme? Specific Cards? If you want to build a deck specifically to beat him, that's easy to do. We just need to know his deck. There is no such thing as a perfect, unbeatable deck.
  2. What cards do you have to work with? Are you planning on just buying the cards we suggest, or do you want to build with what you have? If you post a list of your cards, that would make this a lot easier.
I for one would be glad to help you.

He usually plays with assorted colors he likes the ratio to be 20 land 20 creatures 20 spells. He focuses his decks around nasty combos that will either mill you on turn 4 or locks you down so you can't do anything...

i would like to use my own cards, because i am on a strict budget and can only get maybe if i am lucky, 2 packs a week.

the cards I have mentioned above are cards ranked 4+ stars by the comments and usage by players who have used them on the MTG Main sight so that is why I posted them.

sometimes i think i should cut my deck down to 1 or 2 colors instead of having 3.

Okay. Building a deck to counter a particular deck is easy. Every "unbeatable" card/combo has a card that will nullify it in a heartbeat. So if you can get me some specifics from his deck, I can tell you the best way to counter and respond to his deck. It's hard to tell you what to build though without knowing what he has. Make sense?

I'm also very understanding of playing on a budget. Building a deck designed to do what you want to do using budget-standard is not impossible. It would really help to know what cards you have though. If you want, type up a list and email it to me: [email protected] I'll look it over and see what we have to work with.

Also, the cards that you listed are decent, yes. In the right deck and situation that is. It looks like you are going for a control deck, which is a good way to go, but difficult to do with white and green. Usually for control you want blue/black. But, we can work with that next.

So, to start, why don't you make a list of your cards, email it to me, and try to get a more specific picture of what his deck is, and the more specific the better. With that info, this will be a piece of cake. Good luck!

Instead of buying only 2 two packs a week, I would suggest ordering specific cards up to that value. You will get what need much easier that way. In Bant colors, one of the cheapest decks I can think to build would be a Quicksilver Amulet deck. They are decent and have plenty of win conditions.

That should be plenty to start you off if you get 4 of each. There are tons of really cheap creatures to help with the early game. If you run a bunch of artifacts, I would suggest running Vedalken Certarch and Dispatch , as they are great control cards. Mana Leak is cheap currently, so definitely get 4 of them. Day of Judgment is also not too bad, but Divine Offering might work if you want a cheaper alternative.

For mana ramp on turns 1-2, Birds of Paradise , Llanowar Elves , and card:Avacyn's Pilgrim (the two latter are mere cents a piece) can help you play your amulets on turn 3 for big creatures on turn 4.

As for the fatties themself, I would suggest cards such as Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur , Blightsteel Colossus , Frost Titan , Platinum Emperion , and Sheoldred, Whispering One . The only one of those that will cost you more than $3 to buy would be the Blightsteel Colossus , but all together you could buy all of those for about $16 or less, excluding shipping. That would give you quite a few large creatures to help you get an easy win. You will probably want some card draw as well, so cheap cards like Ponder , Think Twice , and Forbidden Alchemy would go well in here.

As for small artifacts to help out your metalcraft for the two cards listed earlier, Tumble Magnet is great, as is Contagion Clasp . Flight Spellbomb can win the game with a Blightsteel Colossus out, and is a form of card drawing if you need it along with helping metalcraft. Ichor Wellspring is good for the same reason. Glacial Fortress and Sunpetal Grove aren't very expensive. Maybe 1.5 to 2 dollars a piece.

Finally, Perilous Myr is one of the best 2 drop artifacts there is. He kills Crusaders along with possibly killing whatever he blocks, so he can be a 2-for-1. If there is something specific you need to stop, Phyrexian Revoker can stop activated abilities of whatever card might be killing you.

I hope this possibly gave you some ideas on what to build. You could build a budgetQuicksilver Amulet for probably 30 dollars, maybe cheaper.

@valkyria Ultimately it depends on what you want to do. If your intention is purely to beat his deck, specifics are the way to go. I caution you though if that is your choice, simply because that path leads to a volley of two players constantly building decks simply to beat the other, and that becomes old very quickly. However, I completely understand putting someone who is cocky in their place. It's quite fun!

If, however, you are interested in building a good solid deck that may or may not win against your friend everytime, but has a better chance of winning against multiple types of players and is more of an investment over time, then metalmagic has given you some great advice and tips here.

Either way, deck building is the most fun part of this game for me, and I'll help with whatever choice you make.

Well cryptichorror, i E-mailed you what cards i have to work with for the three colors i want to play with they are not in any particular order just what i have available to me at the moment

valkyria says... #16

As what you guys said as well about group games i have never entered one for me it has always been either draft (which i suck at), or one vs. one.

i cannot see myself in a multi-player game however i think it would be great if i was invited to one for a change

November 3, 2011 11:56 a.m.

cryptichorror says... #17

Or not even multiplayer, but just if you ever play against someone other than this guy you want to beat. My point was that a deck built specifically to win against his one deck, might really suck against any other situation.

I'll take a look at your email and see what I can come up with.

Wait, how does he win on turn four? That's basically impossible in current standard. the only deck that can feasibly win turn four are UW Aggro or RDW with perfect hands.

So, basically, is your friend even playing standard?

November 3, 2011 12:57 p.m.

rckclimber777 says... #21

I can win on turn 4 pretty easily with my infect deck... just saying.

Btw that could be a cheap strategy as well.

4x Plague Stinger

4x Glistener Elf

4x Livewire Lash

4x card:Ranger's Guile

4x Ichorclaw Myr

4x Mutagenic Growth

4x card:Tezzeret's Gambit

4x Unnatural Predation

then some lands (if you can afford it the crusaders and inkmoth)

It won't always win, but at least you'll almost be guaranteed a victory every now and then.

here is my actual deck if you want to try it out:

Aggro Infect

My suggestion build a deck put in on here and then keep tweaking it as you get feedback. Some of my decks were AWFUL when I first started. Now they're rather competitive in FNM and unless I'm playing someone who placed in the top 8 at a large event I'm not normally worried about having no chance against someone. I always have a chance at winning.

btw metalmagic had Great suggestions if you can read through the typos ;)

cryptichorror says... #22

I wondered the same thing. If he's not, then by no means should you. You wouldn't be competetive.

Also, valkyria, you might want to check you email. Neither email went through.

Hey, stop bashing on my typos. They are each special in their own way.

Well if he uses combo decks, you most likely want a control deck. What are some of these 4+ cards you speak of? It could really help us figure out what you can do.
