My friend wants to know if Ajani vs Nicol Bolas duel deck cards are standard legal.

Only if they appear in a standard set.

So for example, if the cards in the duel decks were in the Scars of Mirrodin block, the Innistrad block, or Magic 2012, Magic 2013 then they're standard legal.

So for example Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker is now standard. Anything else from it you'd have to search for.
