Izzet Really Control Without White? Playtest
Standard
SCORE: 34 | 28 COMMENTS | 10270 VIEWSSo I've been working on this deck for a while now, and I've been trying to get it competitive, and I'm planning on taking it to a PTQ this Saturday.
However, I'm not entirely sure that, in its current state, it's quite good enough. It seems like, no matter the matchup, I never have the right answers at the right time. I particularly have trouble dealing with planeswalkers, and I'm considering mainboarding Pithing Needle , but other than that, I'm really not sure what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

That's the main reason I haven't included it at all. It is possible to cast, but incredibly hard to do so, especially early on. It might work quite well as a sideboard option, though. It'd be very useful to have an instant speed burn spell that hits for more than Mizzium Mortars . But what would you advise taking out for it?

So I've made a few changes, but ended up not adding in Fated Conflagration . In most cases, Pithing Needle is more useful, at least in my opinion (not to mention much easier to cast).
However, my sideboard needs work, which particularly worries me, since the PTQ is tomorrow. I did write out my plans for the sideboard in the description, but I'm not entirely sure how much they'll help. Mono-Black Devotion seems to be my worst matchup right now, followed by Azorius Control, and in a few cases Red/Green Monsters. Any thoughts?

Is Counterflux vs Azorius needed? It would seem to me like Gainsay , which mono blue will board in against you, would come really handy vs the blue devotion board.

Somewhat. I suppose any other counter would work, but Counterflux is unique in the fact that it allows me to safely counter anything they cast (usually one of their win conditions) without needing any additional counter magic. Because I don't have access to Sphinx's Revelation and they do, this is a huge point, since they normally have more counters than I do when they attempt to cast something. Plus, I can't counter Elspeth, Sun's Champion with Gainsay .

The triple red is incredibly taxing, but if you want a more versatile mainboard option, you can consider Fated Conflagration .
