Tarmogoyf/Dark Confidant replacements for modern Jund?

Deck Help forum

Back again with another modern question. I'm looking to turn my standard jund deck to modern, but dont want to buy goyf or dark confidant. Any ideas for cards that could replace these? I've thought Blood Scrivener for DC but that's about it.

Any recommendations welcome!

Phyrexian Arena is the only budget Bob replacement I can think of, and unfortunately, Tarmogoyf is irreplaceable.

Only problem with Phyrexian Arena is that its harder to get rid of

Actually, that's not the main problem. The primary issue is your being pinged for every card, whereas Bob wouldn't ping you for lands. Unfortunately, that makes a huge difference.

Yes, but your also losing less for most cards, AND its not revealed. Most times that doesn't matter, granted, but some times it sucks

There are no cards of comparable power in a vacuum. Those are two of the best 2-drops ever printed, so trying to replace them is going to make your deck objectively worse.

What you CAN do, is not run "Jund" in its purest sense but rather brew up something with a more specific theme. Tarmogoyf is the strongest vanilla green creature of all time, but could get outmatched by a Boneyard Wurm if it's played in the right deck.

Again, your deck won't be as good because your cards will have to be conditional, but cards do exist that can match the big dogs if you're willing to get a bit goofy with it.

B/U/G decks that mill yourself for Boneyard Wurm and Kessig Cagebreakers are fun

Problem with Cagebreakers is that the wolves come in tapped. I've seen that lose the game more than once.

Yea. And I've seen it win games too :) If Cagebreakers don't do it though, you do have Spider Spawning

That one can win games

I've swapped scavenging ooze and goyf. works well for me due to the removal and counterspells I run. I use a B/U/G deck. But with jund you can use ghor clan rampager with ooze so for 2g and 1r you get a permanent +1/1 1 life and the blood rush.

To be honest, the deck isn't worth playing without either one :|

Scavenging Ooze is a great replacement for Goyf, since it's big, hates on Snapcaster, and even invalidates opposing Goyfs.

As for Bob, there's really no good replacement. The problem with Phyrexian Arena is not that it pings you for every card, but that it costs 1 more mana and does not attack for 2. Sign in Blood might work, or maybe just running a more aggressive Jund deck with something like Strangleroot Geist instead.

I am facing the same question about Tarmogoyf . I was thinking about Talara's Battalion instead of Scavenging Ooze . What do you guys think about it?

Talara's Battalion , honestly, isn't a very good card, unless you're playing aggro. The fact that you have to play something before her to make her useful is what makes it that way
