So I am pretty new to playing but I have a pretty decent collection. I was wondering what some of your opinions on the top budget cards (under $5) in modern were and why you chose such cards. I am big on u/g/w but I'd like to hear a few on all five colors and everythIng else out there. Again this is on BUDEGT cards, let us leave the Jace's and the Bola's at the door.

Sorry cerulean, but honestly Modern isn't the sort of format you can get into with budget cards. If you're just playing with friends then it's fine, but if you're attempting tournament play i would consider waiting until you had a larger collection and you can build up to a competitive deck. Budget cards aren't used in modern chiefly due to the extremely long time cards stay in the format for, once you buy and build one deck you can often use that same deck for the rest of your time playing modern.

I think the most budget deck you can get is Affinity like deck:domo-arigato-mr-roboto. The most expensive cards in the deck are the Glimmervoid s which are $10 a piece. Your mirror match v.s. Arcbound Ravager really sucks but everything else is good.

Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas was $6 last I checked, the Master of Etherium is around $6, and the Mox Opal s are near $6 as well. Not bad for modern. Best of all the only difference between the legacy and the modern lists are the artifact lands: Seat of the Synod and Vault of Whispers .

What hubris!

Modern can be played with a budget, and any format can (to an extent). A burn-deck in Legacy will only set you back $10 or $15 for the overall deck, with your land-base determining how much more you'd be spending.

That being said, you can build a pretty dirty Quest for the Holy Relic deck without a lot of cash. 4x Quest for the Holy Relic , 4x Memnite , 4x Ornithopter , 4x Kor Skyfisher , 4x Faerie Impostor , an Argentum Armor , some Tempered Steel s, Signal Pest s, and filler will only set you back about $12, most of which goes toward Memnite and Tempered Steel .

I wasn't considering building a budget deck so to speak, just wanting to know some of the good lesser priced cards to supplement. Love all the answers though and I want to eventually get into tournaments but I think I need to broaden my skill base quite a bit first.

If your intent is to try out modern then I'd suggest playtest some of the popular decks and wait until the modern masters becomes released before you buy cards for the format, it could be just a good idea to save up your money and draft that when it's released. But for staples, currently the prices for most of the cards are above $5 due to their demand, but you could collect some of the urza's lands. And as for your comment on no jaces or nico bolas's, the popular decks of modern don't actually run any copies of these planeswalkers, now that I think about it you might be able to get most of second breakfast fairly cheap.

Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas is about $10 right now. He's gone up since a Legacy deck around him won a Legacy Open.

I don't know a lot about Modern, but a deck I've been toying with is a G/B dredge-like build. Involving cards like Lotleth Troll , Gravecrawler , Vengevine , Bloodghast , Grisly Salvage and Life from the Loam . I think the most expensive card in the list is gravecrawler followed closely by the vengevine. Obviously if you go with shocklands it'll be a bit more expensive. Not exactly budget, but still seems pretty solid while also being pretty effective.

@ mafteechr Damn, glad I got him when he was cheaper. Hope he'll go back down again, I'd like to pick up one more.
