Deck link: The Gob Father

I am trying to get this deck ready for the PTQ that comes to my area in June. I am currently splashing white for anti-removal but I also found Mentor of the Meek which might help with my card draw problems if a game goes longer than normal but doesn't fit into the tribal theme.

Any tips/advice is greatly appreciated.

Bringing standard tribal goblins to a PTQ is going to be a waste of your time...

xlaleclx, I really appreciate your constructive criticism. The deck has worked well for me, I am mainly looking for possible improvements.

I'm 100% serious when I say this. Keep the mountains. Drop everything else.

Why is there so much deck hate going on here? There is nothing wrong with taking an idea and running with it, and it might sound crazy, but a lot of people would rather lose with a deck they love than win with a cookie cutter combo they saw online.

@psychoza Don't let these guys ruin your opinion of the tappedout community, I've been on here sense I started playing in January and have had a great experience, these two are straight tools.

Anyways back on topic; I'd drop your Krenko, Mob Boss numbers from 4 to at most 3, and remove the 2 copies of Fervor for 1 more Hellraiser Goblin and another Burn at the Stake . Your 3 drop spot is really important in a Goblin deck, you're either investing in more bodies for the turn 4 Mob Boss drop, or you're setting out a Five-Alarm Fire for some damage on your next turn. Also I'd drop Dynacharge for Pillar of Flame . Less pertinent to the matter, think about Reverberate in your sideboard. It's way under rated against control decks, you can literally insure your Mob Boss will see the field with 6 mana.

Hope this helps!

The fact that the deck runs bad cards is not a problem; I'm all for fun, crazy-themed decks. HOWEVER, psychoza said he wanted to get it ready for a PTQ, an extremely competitive event. Because of that, we told him that in order to make his deck PTQ-ready, he should drop the Goblins. If you want to take a crazy deck to an FNM, fine. But to a PTQ? No, that's just a waste.

Then explain your reasoning, don't take a shit on the guys windshield to get him to clean his car.

Ok then:

There are a few things that an aggressive red deck needs above all: these are SPEED, CONSISTENCY, and REACH. Any addition to the deck that does not help with one of these three is not a good inclusion.

Krenko, Mob Boss is too slow because he is a high cmc creature without haste, unlike Hellrider . So he hurts the deck's SPEED. Fervor and Five-Alarm Fire hurt the deck's SPEED because they require you to tap out to play something that does not affect the board, like a creature or burn spell.

Dynacharge , Massive Raid , Burn at the Stake , Illusionist's Bracers , and Foundry Street Denizen are all DEPENDENT on having other creatures in play to be good. Because they are bad on their own, they hurt the deck's CONSISTENCY, unlike something like Rakdos Cackler , Searing Spear , or Boros Reckoner .

Hellraiser Goblin forces you to attack when you may not want to and is not as powerful as Boros Reckoner or Pyreheart Wolf .

Playing tribal Goblin cards hurts your CONSISTENCY and SPEED by forcing you to play with suboptimal cards.

The cards I mentioned adding in my first post all give SPEED, CONSISTENCY, or REACH.

Thanks Monoxidechild and detentionsphere for your advice. I will continue to try and improve my deck with the feedback that has been given.

I'm sorry if I came off as harsh. I merely think taking a suboptimal deck to a PTQ is a bad idea.

It might have been suboptimal, but then again I have never been to a Magic event in general. I am really not sure what to expect. I have no clue about my local meta game. I basically just wanted to go and try out a deck that was really fun to me. Having 20 1/1 goblins out on the field and Boros Charm ing in the face of a Supreme Verdict just makes me giggle.

That all being said, I have 90% of the cards in this deck (Aggressive Behavior) I constructed after taking in your feedback. I am missing 3 Vexing Devil and 2 Ash Zealot but those should be easy enough to acquire. I would really appreciate further input if you have any to give.

Thanks in advance.

That list seems very good with only one problem: Vexing Devil is terrible. Really. To quote:

"You want 4 damage? You get a creature.

You want a creature? You get 4 damage.

Need to kill your opponent this turn? Too bad.

Need a chump blocker to keep you alive another turn? Too bad."

It gives you what your OPPONENT wants you to have. I would replace them with either Stromkirk Noble (preferably) or Stonewright . Good luck!

What do you think about Cryptborn Horror ? I obviously wouldn't put 4 in but I was considering maybe 2? Also, in my deck description I talking about Inquisitor's Flail and how I think it might be decent addition but possibly slow the deck down. I primarily am thinking of it equipped on Boros Reckoner .

May 3, 2013 9:30 p.m.

Cryptborn Horror , like Vexing Devil , is a "trap card"; it's terrible if you're behind and can't punch through for damage, it's terrible after a wrath, and if you're swinging for 5-6 damage on turn 3, you are probably winning anyways.

Inquisitor's Flail seems too cute... you really just want to play lands, creatures, and burn.
