Countryside Assault:R/G Modern

Hello, I've never really participated in an eternal format, but given that I've been collecting for 15 years, I should have at least the skeleton to build an okay Modern deck.

This idea was inspired when I was looking through the Starcity Games September sales. I was looking at the "Modern Masters" sales and was surprised to see Countryside Crusher at less than $1 ($.99 without the sale). I've wanted to make something out of this giant, but never had any to experiment with. I figure if I set aside a little to buy the crushers, and whatever else I'd need to fill out the idea, I could make an inexpensive, fun, and possibly powerful deck.

I'm not expecting to take a Grand Prix... ever really... but should my local store begin Modern tournaments, this felt like a fun, aggressive build. Suggestions and comments are welcome! Even if something is out of my price range, I'll take it into account for the future.

Honestly, that's not a bad first Modern deck at all. It's reasonably powerful and it's fun to play. The thing that you'll have to worry about these days is the effect of all of these Scavenging Ooze s running around and how it upsets your Life from the Loam .

There's even a thread on MTG Salvation for a similar deck. Perhaps it'll give you some pointers.

Yeah, Scavenging Ooze is definitely something that could mess things up. Thank you for the positive feedback :) I'll read into that thread. Thank you!

Also Deathrite Shaman is popular. Pithing Needle is a good answer for Ooze and Shaman, not to mention Birthing Pod and Planeswalkers.

Pithing Needle Is pretty nice. It would make a decent sideboard card :) Though, I think Deathrite Shaman 's first ability would still work with the needle, right? I know the one that could remove my Life from the Loam s and Faithless Looting s would.

Excellent question! It is a mana ability, but it requires the exiling of a land out of a graveyard first...

You should ask that in the Q&A!!!

I took a look at the rulings for Deathrite Shaman on gatherer:

10/1/2012 Because the first ability requires a target, it is not a mana ability. It uses the stack and can be responded to.

So if I get Pithing Needle s to sideboard against the Shaman and Scavenging Ooze it would affect ALL of it's abilities :D

I was sifting through gatherer, looking up modern red and/or green cards that had "land" in the text box. I was trying to see what other cards might work out in this, and options should I choose to later gear it to an Assault Loam build. I came across a gem I hadn't thought about in years: Rathi Dragon . More than likely, my next purchases after getting the Countryside Crusher s and Life from the Loam s will be to get more effective dual lands, but I might consider this Dragon in place of the Ruinous Minotaur s. Any thoughts?
