Tuning my first modern deck

Deck Help forum

I've been out of magic for abt 2 years and I'm wanting to get back into it.

I want to run spirits, the deck just has allot of interaction and looks like allot of fun, and can be affective on a budget.

Tempted Spirits is the list that I'm working on, but i feel that the mana base is a little rocky with the black splash, and I'm not sure if my current control package is affective enough for modern.

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks

The manabase isn't so good, indeed. It's understandable when you join Modern: the price of Fetches and Shocks is high.

I'd advise you to go UW for now, taking your time to play and master the deck, and see if you're willing to make it a 3-colored one. Instead of Lingering Souls, I would play Phantasmal Image (copy Drogskol Captain and have fun) and Path to Exile (a bit pricey but still arguably the best removal in the format).

I don't see how Opt helps you here. It's more for combo decks that really want to insure the maximum quality of their draws and go off asap.

The counterspell package is good, really comes down to what you prefer.

Idk about Vapor Snag. I truly like the card but I'm always playing it as a 1-of because: A. It's usually not that backbreaking for your opponent and B. It's horrible vs Ponza (Thragtusk and Obstinate Baloth), vs Eldrazi (Thought-Knot Seer says hello), vs DnT, vs Spirit, and probably a lot more I can't think of right now. It's a really good tempo card and the life loss is free value, but to me it's so depending on what's on the table that you can't run more than 1.

Just my opinion! :)

WizardOfTheNorthernCoast yea the only reason i considered the splash was because even if i don't pull black mana i can still run the deck, but what im realizing is that the duel lands slow down my mana base to much, so i'll probably pull lingering souls for now

I was also thinking about pulling opt, so if i pull opt and 1 vapor snag that gives me 3 slots for another control/tempo card, any suggestions?

What are your thoughts on Logic Knot I like the card but without running fetches i'm not sure if its good enough to run

I like LK too, but it's better with Fetches indeed. However, you don't have much use of your graveyard - aka the extension of your hand - aside from Moorland Haunt so that's good to have a way to interact with your GY. If you ever come to play Black, Murderous Cut is a good deal too.

If you want to play more tempo/control cards, I'd strongly advise you to put in Path really. You can't go wrong with PtE. Also, I'd remove 1 Favorable Winds for the 4th Path. FW acts as an anthem that you already have with Captain / Phantasmal Image on Captain. Also, you do want to draw proactive cards at all stage of the game and FW is only good if you're ahead.

What concerns the mana base, if you go with lots of Basics, Prairie Stream is surprisingly good. You can also fetch it, should you one day come to buy Flooded Strands. Seachrome Coast is great when you have many low CMC cards with various colors. Coasts synergize less well with Glacial Fortress though.

WizardOfTheNorthernCoast ok so i removed the black splash

I replaced lingering souls with 2Ojutai's Command and an additional Mana Leak

I replaced Opt with Thought Scour, I think thought scour will be good with knot as well as some nice tricks to disrupt my opponents

What do you think?

Try EDH. Fewer limits, and more fun. Good luck either way.

Thought Scour is much better with real GY interactions (would be great with Lingering Souls for example, or things like Snapcaster Mage and Tasigur, the Golden Fang). Just like Opt, it's a cantrip that replaces itself so all in all, it's quite ok I guess. Not the best but not the worst :)

Never played Ojutai's Command so I can't tell you how good/bad it is. It seems pretty ok in your build though.

EDH is indeed a cool way to play Spirits without ruining yourself but I guess you're not that interested in the format since you're specifically looking to get into Modern.

WizardOfTheNorthernCoast yea i feel like as a 2 of scour isn't a bad option for us, but all in all i feel pretty good abt the list as it sits. But yea edh looks fun but its never really been my thing, i just love the consistency and balance of modern.

Like my first modern list was a restore balance deck and i absolutely loved it
