I'm looking to build an awesome deck to teach a first timer, with. Needs to be simple, cheap, effective and with enough complexity to give a good feel for the game. It will be for casual multi-player.
I am thinking a green/white deck, but any suggestions will be considered.
All suggestions welcome.
Hmm the best way to teach a new player is using the starter decks no? Or if you want go and buy all the loose cards that are 1/1 or have expensive mana costs (in other words cards people dont use) and build a deck or 2 of 30 cards.
As an example here in Peru i know a store that have boxes of magic cards and are 3 per 1 sol. (Peruvian coin) in US would be $1 is 2.55 soles so i can buy like 8 cards with one dollar (of course we are talking of card people who know to play dont use and will never use, i assume that where you live happens the same thing.
hope it helps

They do have Intro decks for the reason to introduce players to the game. I have the green and the white Intros for 2013 core set and they are both not bad decks for getting people started.
I would say Green would be the easiest color to learn and comboing it up with white could be not too half shabby of a deck depending on what sets you are planning on using. maybe focus the white around some lifegainning effects and buffers for the green to be the hitters

Thanks guys (and gals?). Yeah I was thinking a 2013 starter deck, but have not seen what is in them, yet. I might just grab each of the starter decks to let him familiarise himself with the game and go from there.

or if you have 2 decks give him one to play vs you, or you can use your own deck in a two 30 card decks, also the duel decks are a 2 game box, 2 decks of 60 cards (if i remember good) for 2 players

Yeah, the issue is most of my decks are too complex for beginners and we tend to play multi-player. I'm sure we'll work something out though.

4Vs4? Or x Vs x, try mini commander (lol) just 40 all different (except lands of course) that way every card would be a surprise!!!.....and you dont have to tell the new ones "this cards works with this making this effect and this others gain this and this so this is a combo or you can add this cards to make this" commander has it's own combos but as all cards are different you dont have to broke the head thinking "i cant play that this card i need the other damn i have 4 copys...."

Yeah, that is actually a brilliant idea!! I may have to. It could be as many as 7v7 so having something new will be fun for everyone.

well if your decks are too complex then I would say to simply grab an intro deck since that is what they are intended to do plus the decks come with a sheet explaining the general strategy behind the deck also lists what is included so they can be later re-assembled. Of course a sheet of paper with the basic rules to MTG is in there too which the person learning may find useful.
Depending on how many cards you have you could simply make a beginner deck using mostly common/un-commons and having a rare or two to be more the focal part of the deck like say Odric, Master Tactician or card:Yeva, Nature's Herald which would be more then suitable in a green/white (both cards are foils featured in the Green and the white Intro decks which really do make either deck good if you can manage to get those cards into play being one of the main strategies for either deck)

Yeah I may do. Just need to find the intro decks. It may be the easiest.

Buy 7 intro decks lol, how many do you play? Uh uh i have another idea, grab all you have, imagine you have 200 cards, mix them, make a super deck and all people draw from there, the discard pile is for all, anyone has the same % of winning, that way you dont have to think of 2 or more decks that are the same level, also prevent making combos, and people will die more difficult, becouse there would be 5 colors of cards (unless you have 200 of one color....) so one will be the lame one that cant summon nothing and one will be the proud one that always summons something and the others will choose to attack the lucky one or keep bulling the lame one (then, of course the lame one in another game will have his revenge) lol
apart from learning the game is have a good time after a few play you all can choose your path and never see again, or.....keep bulling the lame one LOL

Hordika, that actually sounds like a fun idea... I'd have to do it with my Unhinged cards though ;)

:O i have another one (i should work with MTG) mix the 200 cards and divide them in X (where X is the number of players) then each player has its own deck and graveyard, that way each one will have his independant and get married i mean build his playing path, of course dont worry there would be a lame one for everyone to kick or who knows at the end he win the game and be the next american idol jaja you know people sometimes get very excited when they win their 1 game
'ok i attack and activate this and deal you 12 damage, you loose i win!!!!, oomg OMG i won!!!! We are the champions my friends (freddy mercurie's song) no time for looser cuz we are the chaaampions, next day you will have your friend with a Planeswalker custom lol
lets us know, if you wish, how all went or if someone died (or became a planeswalker)

Hmm it could be fun. I do like the idea of one library for all players though. Though I would have a separate library for lands, so players can choose lands or anything else... It could be fun. I will let you know how things go, won't be for a while though. Waiting for everybody to get back to uni after the summer.

The only way I could see this working is if you had a separate library for lands other wise depending on how many players you have people are going to get mana screwed drawing up mana for other colors then the ones needed or everything but land.
There is a reason why normally your supposed to keep the libraries separate in MTG however for laughs it could be worth trying. for more fun in larger players I would suggest game types like Planechase or arch-enemy to mix things up

Yeah, that is what I was thinking, one library for land, one for all other things. Or maybe just have a, "Skip your draw step and search for a land card from outside the game and put it in to your hand," global effect for the game? Might make things a little smoother.
Davosown says... #2
deck:tutor-01-01-13-1 My first draft of the deck. Ultimately, I would like it down to 60 cards.
