Unsummon or Ultimate Price

Deck Help forum

So, after playing my deck:/mtg-decks/esperific-mill/ deck at FNM, one of the biggest issues I had was responding to creatures. I imagine that was, in part, due to the use of Tribute to Hunger, which I am looking to remove for something quicker.

I was thinking Unsummon since U is a quick and easy thing to pay. Sure, it doesn't kill my opponent's creature. But, if they want to have it on the field, they'll have to tap out again for it next turn. However, the other option would be to run a few Ultimate Price. 1B makes this more a turn-two counter, but once the creature is gone, it's gone. Unless, of course, it's in a reanimator deck or something like that.

Any help on this, or any other advice for me deck, is most welcome!

Ultimate Price is ultimate more useful in a variety of situations - although you could find Victim of Night a better fit some of the time.

Unsummon can be great against simic decks and in some situations but really it's only a temporary solution.

for Unsummon - i meant simic decks where creatures have loads of counters so if you return them to hand they lose all their +1 counters

It depends on what you face most often in your meta. If you expect a lot of Haste creatures, then Ultimate Price may be better (unless it's Falkenrath Aristocrat).

If all you're trying to do is hold off your opponents until you can board wipe, then just dropping Unsummon will be a lot more efficient. It will hold them off for a turn while you get the mana to Supreme Verdict.

Also Esperific Mill

Have you considered Essence Scatter? It's unconditional removal and can play around indestructibility or combat tricks.

Thank you all for your advice, everyone. The more I ponder about what to do, the more I think back to my biggest issues during FNM. My biggest issues were, generally, hasty creatures that, frequently, either vampires or multicolor (or both). So, Victim of Night really isn't a good option at all. Plus, the BB casting cost would make it a bit risky since I'm not all decked out on my dual lands yet. Also, Ultimate Price would have some trouble working around the dual-colored cards such as Spark Trooper.

So really, I'm starting to think the better fit might actually be Essence Scatter. While I do love how much cheaper Unsummon is, and the fact that it forces my opponent to make a big decision next turn when it comes to their mana, especially in the early game, I have to agree that the right option is to just get the threat into the graveyard.
