U/W Devotion vs Burn?

Deck Help forum

What cards should I have side boarded to play against burn decks? I seem to have the most trouble against them because of my lack of life gain and Firedancer Satyr destroying all of my devotion. People say its an easier matchup for blue devotion decks, but I've lose to all the Boros Burn decks I've played.

I agree that it is a hard match up.

Last Breath seems big in this match up. Hits Satyr Firedancer and Chandra's Phoenix . You can also use it on your own creature that is going to be burned to gain more cushion.

The gods, Master of Waves , and Bident of Thassa are all burn proof. It's in your favor that all of your wincons are good in the match up. The cards to board out are Detention Sphere , Cloudfin Raptor , and Tidebinder Mage .

Are you running negate?

In your description you mentioned running Spear of Heliod . What you could do, is take out 2 Mutavault and 1 Island or something, then add in some Spear of Heliod to the main board, but also add in Fiendslayer Paladin to the side. This would slightly hurt your blue-devotion theme, but you would only in effect be losing 1 blue source. Alternatively, you could add in more guildgates to the deck, and thus sacrifice a little efficiency for greater midrange presence, and also gaining a very good answer to aggro and burn. Also, if you've got enough room in the sideboard, you could just commit 2 or so slots to guild gates, and 3 to Fiendslayer Paladin if some of your cards are under-performing. Another option would be to add in some plains and up the Judge's Familiar count. Familiar saw play in the last 2 Pro tour winning deck lists, and therefore by my stupid logic is the best card in standard. This would justify you playing plains, as they can cast familiars (helping the man abase) and give you a brilliant sideboard option.

Suggesting that he go down to 22 lands, swapping 2 of those to ETBTapped lands, and adding more to the 3 drop slot isn't really the most effective way to solve this problem. You're in essence making the deck slower and making it far more likely that he will be mana boned. Especially when both of the 3 drops you suggested require double white. I do agree with the suggestion to go to the full 4 Judge's Familiar though. Its a great card for the early games of any matchup.

I actually wouldn't suggest any changes to the deck to deal with burn. You just need to change your sideboard plan up. From the list that I see at the time of posting, I'd bring in:

+2 Last Breath , +2 Domestication , +2 Ratchet Bomb , +2 Negate

and Take out:

-4 Cloudfin Raptor , -1 Nightveil Specter , -1 thassa, -2 Tidebinder Mage .

Oh sorry, i meant take out 2 mutavault and 3 island, and add in white sources there, then change spear somewhere else. I didn't make that very clear on second reading of my post. I was thinking more on the lines of replacing 2 mutas and an Island with 3 of a combination of guild gates and Plains , maybe adding in a Judge's Familiar for a Cloudfin Raptor , then maybe taking out maybe 1 Nightveil Specter and something else (not sure what yet) for 2 Spear of Heliod , then adding some fiendslayers to the sideboard.
